About Buddy

Adoption Fee: $50
American Bulldog mix
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

We know Buddy gets along with men and women. He is exceptionally loyal and bonds with his people. We do not know how he is with children, although the local shelter stated that he is good with children. We do not know how they make their determinations. Buddy is desperate for a stable home environment with capable owners offering structure and love. In the past few months, he has been a stray, in a shelter, in a foster home, and in two apartments with his current family. General Information from Buddy's Foster Mom: 1. Buddy is a very good boy--the best animal I have ever fostered. He is easy to train and redirect. He is extremely loving with his people and he will guard your house fiercely. 2. He is sweet and affectionate. 3. Buddy is good on a leash. We have walked him on a gentle leader harness and other than slight pulling, he follows wherever you go, doesn't have a problem with people we passed, and it is very easy to gain his attention. This might change if the person we were passing had been running towards us or acting erratically. 4. When it comes to chews, he does need to be monitored around other dogs but is fine with people he trusts. 5. I've fed him by hand and out of a bowl and there was no trouble. I can put my hand in the bowl where his mouth is, take food out of his mouth or bowl, etc. I've fed him a foot away from my female German Shepherd and he still didn't have any problems. When I do feed him, I always hold the bowl in order to let him know that the bowl and the food is mine to give so he doesn't get possessive over it, but if you leave a food or water bowl unattended he might get possessive and start eyeing anyone that comes near it. 6. Buddy is extremely responsive. He focuses wholeheartedly on his person and will do anything you ask of him. I can snap him out of staring and hyper-focusing with one whistle or by calling his name. He loves to please you and if you let him know that he has done something wrong, he becomes very remorseful. 7. He is fine with his teeth, jowls, head, body, legs, feet, and tail being touch, pulled, and messed with. You can put your whole body weight on him and he is completely fine. You can put shirts on him. Flip him over on his back for belly rubs and hug him as much as you want. 8. He is great in the bath, he doesn't struggle and is very patient. 9. He is protective of the yard and the house. If he hears people on the other side of the fence, at the door, or in the house he will bark. He does need to be watched around strangers in what he considers his territory. He is fine with people he knows being in the house, but new strangers should be properly introduced and monitored for their first few visits. 10. Buddy loves to sleep with you and he'll stay pressed against you all night long. 11. He is house and crate trained and can hold his bladder for 6+ hours with no problem. 12. He is not good with cats, and while he has not been tested with small dogs, just from the way he watches small creatures moving I would be very careful introducing him. 13. Buddy does best with positive reinforcement. You can correct him once, but if you keep going, he can get easily discouraged. 14. The most important things to Buddy is trust and respect. He's a very confident dog and if he doesn't respect you, he'll start to make his own rules. You can't be afraid of him or let him push you around because then he won't respect you, but if you earn his trust and set boundaries, he'll listen to you about chews, strangers, and EVERYTHING else you want him to do.
