About Brogan (VA)

Adoption Fee: $400
Australian Cattle Dog mix
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Why doesn't anyone want me Brogan asks his foster mom. Well, you take horrible pictures for one thing that don't come close to capturing your personality. Having a very strong male presence, even when playful his look is all business. Every time I get out the camera it's like he wants to slink away. And so it is with Brogan, vulnerable and unsure of his world still. At 3 years old what he needs is security and a sense of 'forever'. This is what he is looking for.... his forever family. In his foster home since July, 2018, he has settled in and we believe we have seen most of his character. One thing for sure, Brogan is very particular of his space and what, who and how he is approached. He will come to you and lay his head on your lap, fetch a quick pat and then walk away.... never lingering too long. If you try to force anything on him that makes him feel uncomfortable or that he doesn't like he is quick to let you know his dislike. Because of this, an only adult family is recommended. Fortunately, Brogan listens to correction well. There is no need for yelling or other physical force with him. We are trying to get him used to diverting and walking away when he feels threatened. His foster sisters give him good insight into what it would be like with his own family. He is not comfortable with much of that at this point choosing instead to stay at a comfortable distance and watch. Meal times by far are his favorite and he happily runs to his bowl and patiently sits till the bowl is placed for him. Brogan initially tested 'faint' positive for Lyme and was treated. He plays in short spurts with his foster sisters. Walks are always a hit as he knows the word and anxiously waits to be leashed and harnessed. These walks usually involve a variety of terrain, stimulation (city noises, wildlife, people and other dogs) and duration.... usually 3 or so miles a day depending on the weather. He can be leash reactive if not given appropriate space when other dogs approach. Brogan lives well with two confident female cattle dogs. He would do best as an only dog. Unfortunately, he lives in the city with a leash law so we don't know how his off leash recall would be. A secure 4 ft fence would be optimal for off leash time. Brogan loves A/C and cold weather, especially snow. Being out and about doing anything is what he likes. The heat is especially hard on him though and care should be given to ensure he does not overheat. Brogan will need a very strong and considerate, proactive owner. One who reads a dog's body language and acts appropriately. Someone who will allow Brogan his space and let him be the best he can be. Someone he can trust to keep him safe and cared for. He seems to levitate towards men, but he does well with his foster mom. Brogan deserves a good, loving, adventurous life. He is up for most anything as long as you work with him. Are YOU his forever home? If you are interested in adopting Brogan please email [email protected] and request an application. Once your application has been received and reviewed, you will be contacted via email or phone by one of our volunteers. After your application is approved, the foster parent for the dog you have selected will contact you to answer any questions you may have and determine if that dog is a good match for your family. If you have no particular dog in mind, we will be happy to keep your application on file and notify you if the right dog should come into rescue. Catahoula Rescue of New England is an all-volunteer group. Dogs in our program are fostered by volunteers. The foster homes care for our dogs as if they were their own. All dogs have received vaccinations appropriate to age and are spayed or neutered. Brogan's adoption donation is $400 which includes Rabies, DHLPP, Bordetella, fecal test, heartworm test when appropriate and is on preventative, microchip, and neuter. We do not have a physical shelter, all of our dogs are fostered in individual foster homes across the New England and Canada.
