Domestic Cat

One lucky morning nine years ago, I was able to trap a wild, underweight kitten behind a local convenience store. She was so small, I couldn't believe that the employees claimed to have been attempting to catch her for almost two months (she didn't even look two months old!). From there, I was able to introduce this small kitten to my cats that I already owned, and she became a part of the household. I named her Megan, and through persistent medical care, she has grown into a healthy, mature cat. Megan gets along well with all of the other cats I have introduced. If not for the terror she'd lived with as a kitten fending for herself, I think Megan would have become a major love-bug lap cat. As it is, she's very sweet - a lover, not a fighter. She's the cat who gets along with everybody, who loves to curl up next to a bud for a nap, and backs away at the sign of a skirmish. She enjoys being pet and will lick my fingers and smell my hair when I bend down. She'll rub against me and is fine with being brushed. She seldom meows, but when she does it's very faint. And while she's super sweet, some of the residual fear from her early days remains. Years ago when regularly involved in rescue/fostering, I converted the master bedroom/bathroom in my house into what I call the 'cat sanctuary.' A pet door in the closet leads to two connected chain link dog kennels attached to the back of the house, and the cats like to go outside and watch the birds and squirrels. This has given them much freedom and independence in a healthy, safe environment. Megan is still a bit skittish and fearful of strangers or loud foreign sounds, but I have confidence this would improve with regular attention. Megan has continually made strides; she's come to trust more and fear less, and clearly loves human attention and affection. Now a 'young' nine, she's lived in what has been more of a kennel-like environment with not as much individual attention as I'd liked to have given her, what with the number of rescues and multiple obligations I've had over the years. An ideal home for Megan would be one with plenty of room for her to do her own thing, but I'm convinced that with some nurturing, patience, and time, Megan will blossom to her full potential and would make a loving addition to any family.
