About Taco

Adoption Fee: 300
Cairn / Chihuahua
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Meet our tasty Taco! He is a Cairn Terrier mix who is about 5 years old and a 10 pound bundle of love! He was owner surrendered due to his previous owner not being able to give him the attention that he deserves. In fact, he spent so much time in a crate that now if you try to put him in one, he whimpers in such a sad, pitiful way that it breaks your heart to hear him. We don't want him to have to suffer that isolation ever again. He has spent time with three different fosters since being with us and every time he has shown himself to be just the greatest little dog. Many of our dogs come to us damaged in some way from the treatment they have experienced up until then but Taco is just a normal dog. He's so normal that it stands out. He loves to play when it's playtime. He isn't rough or pushy. He plays at the same level as the other dog. He is good natured and doesn't like to get into it with other dogs. He just calmly turns away and minds his own business. He sleeps when it's time to rest and goes through the night without a whimper. He eats whatever you give him. No picky eater here. He is affectionate, interested and he listens when you correct him and loves it when you encourage him. He is 99% housebroken. He may have an accident when he first comes into the home as he finds his routine but it is rare. He likes men and women equally and isn't put off when you come home from work with a grump on. He just ignores it and tries to make you feel better. He is a great little guy who does well with dogs of any size and older children. He hasn't been tested with small children. He is not afraid of them when they come to pet him at adoption events but that doesn't mean he has been tested with them in a one on one environment. He is not great with cats and while initially he is curious, he will chase them if they run and can be a bit of a pain with them when in the house. He can climb onto the dining chairs in pursuit if the cat tries to get away from him on the table, so heads up! He does settle down after a while but there is still that 20% of the time he wants to chase them. Some cats are OK with that and enjoy tormenting dogs like him! Taco would do great with another dog in the house as he loves to play and run around. It can take him a few days to check out another dog as a potential playmate but he will start to initiate play after that time if the other dog is receptive. Sometimes he will play straight away. Just depends on the other dog and if they hit it off immediately. But if they don't he will still initiate play after he has gotten the measure of them. Taco would love to go to a home with a fenced in yard so he can run around and play to his heart's content but he will get bored if left alone too long by himself and he may try to find a way out! When home alone he is learning to use training pads and is doing well with that when left for long periods of time. We would prefer him not go to a home that will crate him while gone or overnight based on our previous comments above. Taco can be a lapdog who loves to cuddle and snuggle up close to you but he doesn't always stay long in your lap. He loves falling asleep in the bed with you and mostly will stay in the same place all night, although he sometimes just finds a place to sleep on the floor through the night. It depends on the other dogs in the house and whether he is welcome on the bed. If there are dogs that don't like him there to start with, he won't argue and will find somewhere else until he is welcome. Taco is up to date with shots, neutered, heartworm negative and microchipped. Taco so deserves to be the snugglebug for your family. Why not give him a chance and fill out an application on our website.
