About Jack

Adoption Fee: $300
Chihuahua mix
Age: Adult
Sex: Male

Meet Jack. This 11 pound, 5 year old is beautiful, with a red coat, a fox tail, tall ears, bright eyes, and a nose that can smell a rat. Our veterinarian believes he may have some Basenji mixed with his Chihuahua and he certainly has many of the characteristics found in that breed. The rescue was told he was found tossed from a car. Even so, he seems unscathed from the experience and came in to rescue affectionate and confident. Jack, like the Basenji, is a good hunting dog (they are used to hunt lions in Africa so we're told), and he has already shown the local squirrels he is a foirce to be reckoned with. He can leap and he can jump which makes him a perfect companion for anyone wanting to go exploring, camping, hiking, or other activities. He would enjoy agility classes. He comes when called, wagging his tail and smiling, happy to see you. He is potty trained but wears a belly band when left at home during work hours. He walks well on a lead, watching his person and obeying signals. His rare bark is more of a yodel. Otherwise, he is very quiet. Jack is sweet and loving. He does not want to be leader of the pack but he doesn't let any dog push him around. He never picks a fight but he's happy to finish it. And like the Basanji, Jack becomes attached to his family. As such, Jack would likely thrive in a family with passive pets, particularly if competition for human closeness did not have to be shared with multiple other dogs. He adores children, letting them be close and nurtured by his relaxed, calm company. He has not been tested with cats. He is smart, poised, alert, inquisitive, high spirited, vigilant, and protective. He is happy to sleep with his people but generally prefers sleeping alone in his own bed beside you. He has good manners and he is polite. Two of Jack's favorite activities are to chase a ball and to catch the water spraying from the yard hose. Both just bring him to life. His least favorite thing is the sound of thunder though he is soothed by your presence and a thunder shirt. Are you the right combination of active lifestyle and quiet closeness for this little guy? If so, he will love and care for you all his days.
