About Gilbert

Australian Cattle Dog / Fox Terrier
Age: Puppy
Sex: Male

There's nothing quite like puppy energy and silliness...and then they lie quietly on your shoulder breathing their warm baby breath. Puppies are so pure and vulnerable that it's unbearable to think of them in a high-kill shelter about to be euthanized through no fault of their own. Gilbert, at just 7 months old and 20 lbs (he is estimated to be full grown at about 25 - 28 lbs), was facing the end of his life before it ever really began. Farfel's Texas rescuers are compassionate and loving and couldn't turn their back on this beautiful puppy...they rescued Gilbert just in time. Gilbert is starting out with great energy...the excellent results of his temperament-testing ended with a transport ticket to Colorado and a new life. Gilbert is also incredibly beautiful with a pure white coat and the cutest black spot splashed over his eye. Gilbert will require a commitment to periodic bathing/brushing and excellent nutrition (a daily salmon oil supplement is a great choice for longevity as well as coat care) to keep his coat cottony-soft, shining and very healthy. Gilbert is appropriately playful and inquisitive for his young age. He's super-smart...very typical of the herding dog breeds. He's also bright and so loving...clearly having no memory of his scary start. Since Gilbert is just a baby, he's a blank slate just waiting for a kind and patient human to show him the way. Gilbert has all the potential in the world to be an awesome adult companion - he will form firm bonds with his family (as well as other dogs and humans) and learn positive socialization skills through positive reinforcement group Obedience Classes. It does take a bit of time and commitment...yet pays off a thousand times over when you have a dog that can accompany you in the world with appropriate behavior. Farfel's is happy to provide a list of positive reinforcement (force free) trainers in your area. Gilbert will be a dream come true for a family that enjoys hiking, snowshoeing and any outdoor activities that include a bonded companion. He is also a perfect candidate for agility, flyball and any herding fun. Cattle Dogs (and Cattle Dog mixes) are identified as one of the most intelligent breeds available today. They are amazing students..and if there is love and patience, they can learn virtually anything. We're open to Gilbert finding his forever home with a retired couple or individual with lots of energy to train and enjoy an energetic and super-cuddly puppy. Gilbert enjoys children of all ages as well as canine companions. We would prefer to place him in a home with a bit older kids that can enjoy his fun and participate in a positive training regimen. We're not sure about Gilbert's early life. What we do know is that he's house trained and very clean about himself. He came to the shelter with newly manicured nails and smelling great with a spotless coat..very unusual for a stray dog. Gilbert also knows commands, is extremely well-behaved and seems to have been trained at some point in his life. Gilbert was held for close to three weeks at the shelter to wait for his family to pick him up..everyone was sure that that would happen. When it didn't, the shelter was thrilled for Gilbert to leave the facility and go to a loving and nurturing foster home until his transport to a new life in Colorado. Farfel's has requested that Gilbert be neutered/microchipped prior to his transport to Denver. We're not optimistic that this will occur due to too many dogs and not enough vets in this impoverished area of New Mexico. Farfel's is happy to cover all costs for Gilbert's neuter and microchip after his arrival in Colorado if one of our rescue vets is used. Gilbert will be arriving on transport in Denver on Saturday 8/18/18. Applications are currently being accepted for this sweet and cuddly best friend. Apps can be found at http://farfels.com/farfels-rescue/adoption-form/. If interested, please fill out completely and submit. **PLEASE NOTE: If you're truly interested in adopting Gilbert, please be sure to fill out our adoption application. It's the only initial tool that we have to determine a great match for this very deserving guy. We're sorry, but in most cases, we're unable to get back to those that don't submit an adoption application. Thanks so much for choosing rescue.
