About Basil

Adoption Fee: $500
Australian Shepherd
Age: Puppy
Sex: Male

Basil is a purebred mini-Australian, I adopted him as a pup at 3 months. He was the last of 10 pups, and lived on a screened in back porch with three adult dogs. I dont believe he was ever socialized when young so he does have some fear aggression. He is afraid of strangers, but soon as confident they are friends he can't get enough love from them. He loves to swim and be allowed to run off leash. He has never been to a dog park (none out here) and don't think it would be a good idea right away. Obviously, there can be no small children around they tend to get in face and it scares him. His new mom or dad will need to be home most of the time to give him all the attention he needs. Finding a place for obedience training would be an excellent idea. He does have some behavioral issues, being mildly aggressive with his food, gets a bit aggressive in close proximity of other dogs. He has never bit anyone, but he can be snarling/growling when afraid and that can be seen as intimidating. He has a small under bite so his teeth show easily, when he smiles at me his top teeth show it's so cute. He loves his leash and will carry it around with him in his mouth like giving himself a walk. He knows some commands and even a few tricks, can 'bounce' his own ball and loves to hide one then go around and look for it. Basil will need lots of physical activity and, he could excel at agility if his new person wants to work with him at it. He has a very strong herding instinct, did have daily access to cattle at the breeders. I would love his new home to have someone help him with herding, it would give him such positive strokes for something he is naturally good at. It goes without saying that he must be allowed to be both inside and outside. His new person/family has to have experience with Aussies. I will be very particular on who adopts him, to ensure Basil will be loved as I love him. I believe that he needs to be in a home that respects his boundaries (ie.no small kids) and plenty of outdoor space. He is truly a special, loving boy who just needs more attention than we can accommodate. Note: He is good with other dogs once he gets to know them and loves to play...
