About PETUNIA

Originally found in a cotton field amidst a pile of harvested (but not bailed) cotton ... her little head peeking up. The finder picked her up and noticed her legs were deformed, and noticed a coyote was near by. He saved her life ... and then .... she was rescued by our good friends at Medical Animals In Need (M.A.I.N.) so she could get some help for her legs. Her progress has been tremendous. Petunia (a small shep mix) is a sweet young girl (born approx. Sept 2017) who is unaware of her disability -- she is a true champ! Petunia *can* walk when she chooses, though it's often creative. She almost tap dances on her back legs. She'll often loose her balance and then just scoots which she prefers especially if she wants to get somewhere quickly since she cannot run at her desired lightning speed without assistance. She struggles backing up and also struggles squatting (though this is improving) and as such, she sometimes isn't 'accurate' when going potty, so her foster mama keeps washing wipes and foam handy in case JB needs a little leg wipe after her duties. Petunia's normal pose was sitting, but she's improving much and her default now is to stand -- she's so proud of herself, and so are we! She can now even climb up and down stairs! She also can use her wheelchair with ease (she calls it her 'princess chariot') to help her she walk and run just like the rest of the gang (she actually loves to run so we think it'd be great if her new home had a nice smooth grassy yard for her to live it up). As for games, Petunia ('Tunie for short') really loves tug-of-war and she even plays while standing �'�| again, true champ. She is a super sweet girl who loves people and charms everyone she meets. If Petunia's adopters were home more often than not, this would help with her continued house training.... taking her out pretty regularly and frequently to instill the schedule in her mind, and also instill the 'where to go.' She doesn't like to be alone so she'd be a great companion for someone who's around a lot who wants to have a super cool dog. Petunia isn't a good sibling for the feline types, but with a successful meet and greet, she'd likely do fine in the right setting with a compatible dog. She's not aggressive with other dogs at all -- but we encourage continued socialization so she'll understand it's okay to share her people with another dog.
