About Avocado

Adoption Fee: $350.00
Chihuahua mix
Age: Adult
Sex: Male

Darling Avocado is a shy boy, who needs a quiet household, and patient adopters to help him blossom. He came to us recently from NYC ACC, after he was picked up in Manhattan as a city stray. Nobody came to claim Avocado, so shelter staff released him to our care. Although his medical behavior evaluations were good, he did not acclimate to the shelter environment very well. It's not uncommon for rescue dogs to become nervous and fearful in the shelter, and that was certainly the case with Avocado. As soon as he exited the premises, he seemed to relax and now has been with us for a while. He's seems very submissive and shy at first meeting, and will take a few minutes to warm up to strangers. Once he bonds with his people, Acocado is an absolute love, and the consummate lap dog. Avocado is a handsome fellow. He is a tiny dog weighing only 9 pounds, with extremely petite features. His breed origins seem rooted in the Chihuahua, but he has unusual mask-like facial markings. Atop this pixie frame sits a characteristic apple shaped Chihuahua head, with an elongated pointed muzzle. Avocado's cream and brown speckled coat is smooth and requires minimal grooming. Avocado's demeanor is very demure and mild mannered. He would be a superb choice for an adult single or couple, who have some understanding of rescue dog challenges. We think that he would do best in a laid back home, perhap with one or two low to medium energy dogs or cats. Avocado loves gentle attention, and could join a subdued family with adult children, but the bustling activity of an active family with toddlers would blow his tiny mind! Avocado has not had much obedience training, but is an attentive little boy, who responds well to postitive rewards based obedience and leadership training. He has been an extremely well-behaved houseguest, and has good overall house manners. Avocado will need some ongoing tweaking in his potty habits, his former owners confused him by going back and forth between outside and paper training. He is crate trained, but adopters should expect to forgive some initial accidents as he adjusts to his new potty routine. He will definitely need a hearty winter outfit to brave the elements for his daily constitutionals. Avocado appears to be well cared for, his skin and coat are soft and lustrous, and his teeth and gums are in good shape now, for an adult dog. He just had a full dental cleaning, and unfortunately he lost six teeth. His preoperative blood work was normal, and provides a good baseline for adopters going forward. A consistent dental care plan will go a long way to avoid future dental cleanings and extractions. Avocado is in excellent health and has been neutered. He has been vaccinated for rabies, DHLPP (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvo, parainfluenza and coronavirus) and Bordatella. He has had the 4dx test, and is negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis, and he has been dewormed.
