About Winnie

Adoption Fee: $50
Pit Bull / Lab
Age: Adult
Sex: Female

'Meet our beloved sweet mutt, Winnifred (Winnie). She is medium-sized (40lbs), five-and-a-half year old lab/pitbull mix who is in great need of a new loving, safe home. We adopted her from the pound at 1 year old and she has been a joy to us for the past 4 years, but recently she bit and seriously injured another dog. She is used to being the only dog in the house and this incident occurred while staying with family and sharing space with their dog. It was a reaction to a garage door opening. She has NEVER been aggressive towards humans, always sweet. However, we have a 9 month old son who is becoming increasingly mobile and unpredictable, and we just can't take our chances that a sudden noise or movement from him may trigger her aggression. She needs a home without other dogs, cats, or kids, -- just adults (teenagers are great). Winnie absolutely loves being around humans and is both playful and cuddly. She loves meeting new people. She likes to play tug of war or fetch with her toys, and she can never get enough ear scratches and tummy rubs. She will gladly sit in your lap if you let her despite being a little bigger than your average lap dog. She likes to be active as well, and will always be ready to go on a walk or run with you. She is smart and knows how to sit, stay, lay down, come, touch, shake and can even roll over if you stick with her and encourage her. She is a great listener while indoors, eager to please, and extremely sensitive to your commands. She rarely barks. Outdoors, she gets distracted with all the sounds, sights, and smells, thus why it is important to keep her on a leash at all times when outdoors. Thankfully, she is used to being on a leash outside and is really well behaved; she heels and sits next to you before crossing the street. Though she is very interested in playing with other dogs outside, she doesn't know how. We have taken her to trainers and behaviorists who think she wasn't socialized early on and despite our best efforts we haven't been able to remedy this. She's spayed, microchipped, crate-trained, leash-trained, all caught up on her vaccines and in perfect health. She has a lot of life left to live and love left to give. It's heartbreaking to let her go, and we could easily keep her away from other dogs, but we just can't risk keeping her in a shared house with young children. If she found a safe, loving adult home we know she would be happy. It's going to take a dedicated adult person(s) who is committed to her limitations. It's the hardest decision we've ever had to make, but if we can't find a home she'll have to be euthanized as the shelters we've contacted can't take her. Please help save our sweet girl, Winnie.
