About Nailah

Adoption Fee: $35
Domestic Cat
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Female

Estimated birthdate: 4/16/2015 || Healthy, affectionate, and playful || Ideal owner and situation: Someone patent, calm, and well-experienced with cats. I think she'd do best with a calm mature couple, or a single female owner. Nailah loves attention and praise, but also enjoys her alone time. I don't think she'd do well with most dogs, they would need to be calm and very cat-friendly. I don't think she'd do well with young children/teens (see below info). She'll be fine with most other cats, as long as the other cats are not too assertive or aggressive. She also dislikes having to compete for attention (1-3 pet household might be best). She loves having a routine. She sits on my lap when I work on the computer, read, or watch TV. She doesn't like when multiple guests come over, but has the potential to get better on this with some training. Nailah loves sleeping on the bed and being brushed. She's playful and needs lots of toys, twine/cardboard scratching posts, and windows to look out of (she loves watching birds and squirrels). She can startle easily, so someone experienced with calming down a cat or knowing when to give a cat space is important. She dislikes her ears being cleaned, but I'm able to handle it by myself without too much trouble. She's well behaved for nail cutting and somewhat okay with teeth brushing (still a work in progress). Someone able to do this themselves, or willing to take her somewhere for upkeep is important. She is used to good quality food, and is sensitive to certain brands (skin and ear wise). Nailah is usually vocal/affectionate when she wants attention, and loves playing and running around to show off. She likes chasing toys we throw, then getting recognition for catching or finding it. Sometimes she'll fetch and bring back a toy. She does really well at jumping up and hitting soft toys you throw her way, especially when it's on the bed. Sometimes when we go to pet her she gets startled and runs away, but she comes back soon after and typically lets us pet her - it takes her a moment to realize we were doing what she wanted, and were not chasing her. She prefers me over my husband, I have a quieter voice and baby her more which is likely the reason. She really needs a forever home, not to be re-homed multiple times throughout the years. I'm trying to avoid her returning to a caged shelter, she needs a home that's more suitable for her preferences. She's never had an issue with using the litter box, even after we brought home new kittens, moved, and left for vacation for a few days. She just needs someone willing to handle her calmly and patiently, and someone who is okay with working around her fearful moments. ||| Health and general info: When we first adopted Nailah, she had ear mites, ringworm, dry skin, irritated eyes, and evidence of past fleas. She was initially found in a trailer park (probably the reason why loud noises still startle her). It took months of medication and frequent ear cleanings to get everything under control. Unfortunately, due to this daily care, it made Nailah trust my husband and I less. She went from warming up to us slowly, to being nervous more often. However, she still likes to sit in my lap and get pet, as long as I don't initiate it and avoid moving too quickly. Note: I've tried calming medication/sprays/methods in the past, they had little-to-no effect (maybe I didn't try the right kind?). Basically, she loves lots of attention as long as she feels secure and able to leave when desired. My vet thinks she will always see my husband and I as the people who 'force' held her in order to apply medical treatment. He also said she may need a home with less competition (my other cats are very needy and demanding). He suggested finding someone who doesn't need her to be affectionate all the time (she likes her space sometimes). Nailah's overall health has been really good. She just turned 3 years old in April 2018. Her ears tend to have a small yeast imbalances during seasonal changes, changes in food, or when she is stressed. With bi-monthly ear cleanings, including prescribed medication for a week as needed, I haven't had any major issues with it. ||| I would provide a generous amount of dry kibble, a few cans of soft food, her favorite toys, her bed, a scratching 'post', some treats, and written information on what she likes/dislikes when she is adopted. I will also provide a list of brands/resources for her other pet care needs. ||| If at any time Nailah ends up not working for the family who adopts her, I will gladly help find another home for her. I'm a strong believer in forever homes, but have to sometimes accept the fact that my home may not be the right fit for every pet I rescue. Nailah is a affectionate cat who needs a calmer home environment with less competition for attention, and an owner who appreciates her loving yet independent personality.
