About Baxter

Jack Russell / Beagle
Age: Adult
Sex: Male

Dear Potential Adopter, If you are considering bringing Baxter into your life and your home, I thank you, from the bottom of my heart. He is a special little guy, with lots of love to give. I want to tell you about him. Please bear with me, this will be lengthy. You should know upfront that Baxter has anxiety. I'm not sure how much of it is related to his breed, and/or his past. However, he is one of the best boys you could ever hope to meet. He was adopted by my brother in 2014, from a shelter in Columbus. Since then, he had been my roommate for much of that time. Baxter is incredibly intelligent, loves to cuddle, and sleep next to his human(s). Also, he likes to 'burrow' as I call it. That is, he will kind of paw at/scratch the bedding until I lift the blanket for him to go all the way underneath. He will sleep this way often. Baxter is very food-motivated. You can win his heart with treats. He's been loved, and well-cared for, and maybe a bit spoiled, but I think all dogs deserve that. I buy his treats at Trader Joe's (but this isn't necessary, he loves most any food) - they're good quality and not expensive. Chicken and Beef, $1.99 per package. I break them into 1/3, as they are big. Baxter also likes Frosty Paws dog 'ice cream' - particularly the peanut butter flavor. I get it at Walmart, sometimes Kroger, in the regular ice cream section. Baxter is loyal and protective. His anxiety is high at noises. He really only barks though when he's worried. Otherwise, he's pretty quiet. He'll whine/bark when he needs to go outside to potty. He is house-broken. Baxter would do best in a home without other animals. His hunting instincts are strong, being a Jack Russell. He hates squirrels. He hates cats. I've seen him interact well with my neighbor's dog. He barked at first, but was curious and wagging his tail. We took him to the dog park once, and he played very nicely, until the treats came out. He became food-aggressive. I have to wonder if he was deprived of food at some point, before his shelter life in Columbus. Baxter would probably be best with adult(s) or a family with older kids, who can be understanding of his needs. I'm not sure how he would do with younger kids, as I've never seen him interact with them. He's a sweet, loving, loyal boy though. He doesn't play with toys too often, but will 'sing' along with the rubber chicken that makes noise. It's really cute. So, at this point, you may be wondering why Baxter is back in a shelter, after years of being adopted. I have to assure you, it's through circumstance. My brother, who was my roommate, off and on for the better part of three years, ended up moving to New York City, working in his dream job. Baxter came to live with me. He's an excellent little companion. I myself am 'special needs' like Baxter. You see, I live with the challenges of bipolar disorder. Stress exacerbates it. My job here in Dayton has become more stressful than I can endure. Stress is detrimental to a bipolar diagnosis. I have made the difficult decision to resign from my job, and downshift my lifestyle. I'm moving back to my hometown, 3 hours from Dayton. I'm moving in with my mom, for a while. She has a cat and two dogs. Baxter visited once, at Christmas time. It did not go well. Baxter hated the cat, and was not much better with the dogs. I have to wonder if he was ever used as a 'bait' dog in dog-fighting, due to his size. He would definitely be best in a home without other animals. He had received his veterinary care through Banfield, at Petsmart. He doesn't like having his nails trimmed, and will make noise about it, but will cooperate for the most part. He sheds fur, but that is like most dogs. He likes car rides, with his head out the window. He sometimes gets motion sickness though. As for taking walks, he gets very excited. I must admit he will need some practice though. I don't walk him often. He zig-zags, and pulls. He will need a body-harness. His skin is somewhat sensitive. The mulch at my apartment had irritated him. He will scratch and get a 'hot spot' near his behind/tail. Benadryl, cortisone cream, and over the counter supplies from the pet store helped. I tell you all of this because I know he is special needs, but I also know he's worth every bit of the effort. I pray he is adopted by a stable, loving person, who can give him a home for the remainder of his life. The idea of parting with Baxter, and taking him to a shelter, weighs heavy on my heart. I have shed tears. I struggled at the thought. I want him to have the best life possible. Sadly, that is something I am no longer able to provide. He deserves a good home. He will need your patience and understanding, but he will return your love tenfold. Please feel free to email me if you have questions: [email protected] - also, I'd love to receive pictures & occasional updates from you, if you're so inclined. Baxter is so worth the effort. He has a heart of gold. Thanks
