About Mac

Adoption Fee: $250
Border Collie / Australian Cattle Dog
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Mac is a fully vetted/neutered male Border Collie mix, perhaps with some Cattle Dog, approx 3 years old. All he wants in the world is to be taught new things, go for walks, and be with his people. He is an incredibly sweet dog with his people and extremely loyal.%A0%A0He loves to be petted and always asks for tummy rubs.%A0%A0He will lean up against you for more love if he's running a little low and will curl up with you on the sofa if you let him (then has to be reminded who owns it). He is not a clingy dog, almost never under foot, and has a self-contained nature like the herding breeds.%A0%A0 %A0 Mac is a super smart, trainable dog, able to pick up new tricks with only a handful of repetitions. He knows how to sit, stay, lay down, high five, high ten, shake, back up, do a 360 turn, and beg.%A0%A0He is highly food motivated, and will learn anything for a treat. We suspect some hound in him, because he seems more nose focused than visual.%A0%A0One of his favorite activities is scenting: having treats hidden and being asked to search them out, which he excels at. He's done some preliminary nosework training, which he loved and he was a top student. He enjoys finding things so much that we feed 3/4 of his kibble in his bowl and 1/4 is hidden for mental stimulation. %A0 He does not herd (nip) when family runs in front of him. He enjoys a long walk or hike (and all the new or old scents along the way) and walks well on leash.%A0%A0Usually does not pull much if at all on leash, unless he's short of exercise. He could be a jogging buddy, once he learns to heel. He will get distracted if there are any deer, cats, or other animals nearby.%A0%A0 %A0He is a good candidate for extreme obedience or any 'work' you want him to do, as he is all about learning new things. He is excellent at stay. He waits, with a little whining, for the OK before eating meals. Never had a problem taking meals or bones away from him. House-trained, and has done fine on his own in the house for extended periods using his doggie door.%A0%A0OK in the house without a doggie door for up to 6-8 hours.%A0%A0No destructive tendencies when alone in the house, although he does take plush toys out in the yard, (does not chew or damage them).%A0He will sing along with you if you howl with him.%A0%A0 His current yard has a 5-foot fence.%A0He could dig under, or possibly jump over, but has zero desire to escape.%A0%A0He wants to stay with his people and protect his yard from squirrels, rabbits, and cats.%A0 %A0Mac wants to bond with one person, but is good with a couple or a couple with adult or nearly adult children.%A0%A0Not advisable to have children under 16 around him.%A0%A0He is OK with the ten-year-old in his current house, because she has been raised with difficult dogs and always gives him space when he asks for it. %A0 No problems examining his teeth or trimming his nails, with a treat distraction. %A0 Took a beginner obedience class with him.%A0%A0He seems fine with older, respectful dogs.%A0%A0He barks and pulls at the leash around other dogs on leash.%A0%A0Is fine with off leash dogs that approach him when he is on leash.%A0He's awesome driving around in the car. %A0 He is definitely a dog worth the effort, as he is one of the sweetest dogs with his own family.%A0%A0He would be perfect for someone who has a quiet social life and is willing to finish his training.
