About Troy

Adoption Fee: $20
Australian Cattle Dog mix
Age: Senior
Sex: Male

We pulled Troy from a shelter about 1 year ago, and he was noted to be 12 years old at that time, however our vet believes he's younger, probably closer to 9 or 10 based off dentals. Troy is a very typical herding dog! He is high energy, super smart, incredibly loyal, wants to please his human more than anything, and he can be extremely challenging if he doesn't get enough exercise or stimulation. We have a multi-dog household and he tries to nip at and herd the other dogs. He is not dog aggressive, however due to the nipping (legs and face) he has sparked some fights so he would likely do best as an only dog. I have not tested him with cats. I don't believe Troy was ever properly socialized with dogs when he was younger so he doesn't read social cues well. He does not instigate fights and is rather indifferent to other dogs when not being crowded by them. He really values his people time! Troy was rather obese when we got him but we've slimmed him down to about 45 lbs. Troy has a number of fatty tumors but they are non-cancerous. He is also on a low dose thyroid medication. Troy demand barks, and this is the main reason for rehoming him. He could definitely be trained and exercised out of it, however with so many dogs in our home I can't devote the individual time that he needs to address this issue, and in the meantime it is causing the other dogs to become anxious and fight. Our home is not the right fit for him or us. I would strongly recommend that Troy only go to a home with experienced dog owners who have had cattle dogs in the past. The ideal situation would be somewhere he can have a job to do every day, either working with livestock or agility etc, something that really challenges him and wears him out. I don't want him to spend his golden years jumping from house to house because he's doing what comes naturally to him! He still has plenty of energy to burn, and I'm willing to bet quite a few more years to live!
