About Billie

Meet Billie! Until two months ago she was a happy, though homeless, puppy living on the streets of Srebrenica, in eastern Bosnia. We fed her and her brothers and sisters near our office on a daily basis. She was an energetic and friendly puppy who could always be seen playing with her siblings. Tragically, Billie was hit by a car and left for dead. With the help of some local animal lovers, we nursed her back to health. Unfortunately, the accident severely damaged her sight. It is unclear is she is completely blind or is able to see some shapes and shadows. She is a sweet girl, never barks and likes to lie under a cherry tree (seen in the photo). She is a calm, gentle dog, not at all aggressive, and mainly keeps to herself. She is quite scared in new situations but with patience, she adapts rather quickly. For now, she is being boarded at a local vet's office but it is quite expensive (there are no animal shelters at all in this entire area, another tragedy). A shelter is not really a solution anyway because since she lost her eyesight she is frightened of interacting with other dogs. However, since she is at a vet's office, she is used to other dogs being around, she just prefers to lie under her tree and not to play with them. Billie would do best with a family that has a fenced-in yard in the country, and ideally within driving distance from Bosnia. If children are introduced to her slowly and taught how to interact with a blind dog it is quite likely she would do fine with kids too; they just should not expect to be running around the yard playing with her, at least not anytime soon.
