About Oscar

Adoption Fee: $175
Rat Terrier mix
Age: Adult
Sex: Male

Imagine being a cute-as-a-button 6-lb. dog and having giant humans tower over you. Kinda scary, right? You're barely as big as one of their shoes! Now imagine being poked, picked up, and mishandled by those humans even when you try your best to tell them you're scared or that it hurts. You try looking away, hiding, giving the stink eye, growling, even showing teeth, but they keep on ignoring you. Is it because you're so little that your feelings don't count? When nothing else works, you finally try biting as hard as your tiny jaw will permit. It works!! But it also lands you in the shelter... Well, that's probably the story of Oscar, an 8-year-old Rat Terrier/Chihuahua mix, whose emotions and body language were likely constantly ignored until the inevitable happened. Actually that's only the first part of the story because Oscar had the good fortune to be rescued by New Rattitude and fostered by a kind, patient family, who have worked hard to undo the earlier damage and to help Oscar feel safe. And when Oscar is feeling safe and secure, what a delightful fellow he is! He's a silly little cuddle bug who will shower you with kisses of thankfulness. He's a low-energy (some might even say lazy) guy, who likes his routines, has great house manners, including being fully house-trained, and likes walks around the neighborhood, but does not need them. Oscar would prefer not to share your affection or his food with any other canines, but if you have a smaller, submissive dog or even a cat, he'd likely get along with them fairly well. Don't get us wrong; he still requires respect. Sudden movements in his direction can still trigger his defenses, so he should not be around young children or anyone who is not able to respect his need to feel safe. But a relatively calm home with one or two dog-savvy adults will allow Oscar to begin the newest and very best chapter in his life's story.
