There's nothing quite like puppy energy and silliness...and then they lie quietly on your shoulder breathing their warm baby breath. They're so pure and vulnerable that it's unbearable to think of them in a high-kill shelter! Lena, at just 8 weeks old and 6 lbs (estimated to be full grown at approximately 35 - 40 lbs), was facing the end of her life before it ever began. Farfel's Kansas rescuers are compassionate and loving and couldn't turn their back on this amazing puppy...they rescued Lena just in time. This cuddly Labrador Retriever/Border Collie mix (this breed mix was identified by Kansas shelter and vets...we just know she's incredibly adorable and sweet as can be!) is starting out with great energy. The excellent results of Lena's temperament-testing and vetting ended with a transport ticket to Colorado and hopes for a wonderful new life. Lena is a very beautiful baby...with her shining and cottony-soft black coat that frames her dark eyes, filled with wisdom far beyond her years. Lena will benefit from a commitment to periodic baths/brushing and great nutrition (a daily salmon oil supplement is a great lifelong choice for longevity and coat care). This protocol will give Lena the gift of a gorgeous and very healthy coat. Lena is appropriately playful and inquisitive for her young age. She's so smart and very engaging...so typical of a Lab/herding dog mix. She's also bright and loving...clearly having no memory of her scary start. Since Lena is just a baby, she's a blank slate just waiting for a kind and patient human to show her the way. She has all the potential in the world to be an awesome companion and will form firm bonds with her family (as well as other dogs and humans) through positive reinforcement puppy kindergarten followed by force free group obedience classes (we're happy to share a list of force-free trainers in your area). It does take time and commitment...yet pays off a thousand times over when you have a dog that can accompany you in the world with appropriate behavior. We're open to Lena finding her forever home with active retirees who have lots of energy to train and enjoy a young puppy. She would blossom with the time and attention that this type of home offers. Lena is also great with children and other dogs. She would be a very fun and cuddly best friend for dog-loving kids. She's a happy, playful puppy that will love the fun of the trails of Colorado once a bit older. Our hope for Lena is that she goes to a home where she's not home alone all day. A family that either works from home, can bring Lena to a dog-friendly workplace or arranges for doggie daycare or a dog walker would be a great choice. Lena will be up to date on her vetting. We've requested that she be spayed when she arrives from Texas, however a very young puppy like Lena is often deemed too young to fix. If this is the case, Farfel's will cover all costs for Lena to be spayed and microchipped at our Denver vet to be in line with our commitment to be a part of the solution to pet overpopulation. Lena will be arriving on transport in Denver in mid-July (we'll update exact date when information is confirmed).
