About Niko

Adoption Fee: $250
Australian Kelpie mix
Age: Adult
Sex: Male

Niko is fostered in Sarasota, FL (Sarasota County). We are a foster-based rescue and always looking for foster families! Niko is a very laid-back, loyal boy of about 9 years and 65 lbs. He had surgery to repair a knee injury and is doing great. He likes to play with his toys, but will not chase them. He does not show any interest in swimming. Niko is the kind of dog who will never stray from your side once he trusts you. When you arrive home from work he is right there at the door waiting for you to come in. He gets very happy to see you after even moments away from him. He can have a brief moment of leeriness with strangers, even kids, and as such we are recommending only older, considerate children for his forever home. This manifests as a quick snarl and it is done. This is not to say he has a mean bone in his body, and we believe it could be him protecting the person he has made a connection with. If you introduce new people, we have found that giving them a treat to give him he will be less likely to have that moment of leeriness. Regardless, he would make a loving and loyal family dog. He currently lives with a young lady, her younger brother and friend. They are confident he would be fine with elderly folks as well. He knows basic commands such as 'sit, crate and go lay down' but can be stubborn and responds to commands on his own terms. Niko is neutered, up-to-date on vaccines and preventives, microchipped and heartworm negative. He is looking for a special person or family to give him a loving forever family. As a senior dog, his standard adoption donation is $250, however he can be adopted by a senior adopter 65+ for $150 through our Seniors for Seniors program.
