About Hunter

Our family is seeking the perfect owner for Hunter, approx. 7 year old Jack/Beagle mix. Willing to transport within 2 hours of Costa Mesa The good: Hunter loves his owners and familiar people. He is great out and about. Greets dogs in a friendly way, walks well, is a star at the dog park and dog beach. He has successfully lived with a cat for 6 years although he has remained 'interested'. He's the perfect lap dog, cuddler, knows basic commands, and goes into a crate VERY well. He is happy to sleep in his crate or his bed. He likes other dogs, selectively. The bad: Hunter has behavioral issues and is unfit for a home with children and child visitors. He is overprotective of his home and barks aggressively at newcomers. He needs to work with a trainer on this. We have been managing this behavior by leashing him and motivating him with treats or crating him when someone comes to the door. For play dates at our house with children or visits from the cable guy he goes to daycare or if not possible, he is put in his crate. He has food issues like many JRTs, if food falls to the floor forget it- its his. This behavior is managed by crating him while you eat and isolating him to feed him. He has back and hip issues from birth. He has had hip surgery and walks much better now but this area does bother him and he does not like to be jumped on by bigger dogs. He runs and sometimes walks on 3 legs. Hunter's perfect home can be an apartment or a farm, he is not picky. He can hike a mountain with you or just lounge with you on the couch.
