About Redman

Red is 70lbs, housebroken, crate trained and walks all on a leash. Ok with resident dog after brief walking introduction. Tolerates other household dogs but will eventually tire of being interrupted at play and does not like to share playtime with other dogs. Will get rough if pushed too far. He is dog reactive to unknown dogs. Needs redirection and responds well to training. Has not been around young children under the age of 10. Will be good with older children who know how to properly care for and treat dogs. He could react to mistreatment even if intended as child play. Red is sensitive to high energy or stressful situation. I believe he was abused by some so he becomes nervous and will leave the room if voices are raised. It takes 2 - 4 weeks for him to settle into a new routine and begin to trust. He works hard to evaluate and understand his owner. He may be apprehensive at first. He will stare at the owner if he is uncertain or has concern. That is an important time to be calm, non-reactive, avoid giving commands. Use the opportunity to earn his trust by speaking slowly and calmly to let him know everything is ok. It only takes a couple of minutes for him to relax and be ready for the next adventure or play time. Better in a home with another dog: Better as the one and only in a calm, caring home with good dog leadership skills and pitty breed experience. Needs an active household where he can participate in regular, preferably daily, outdoor activity. Clean bill of health from the Vet. He does have a sensitive stomach. It seems to be associated with the stress he has endured as he has no medical issues. I've found a diet that seems to work well for him. He is currently on Organix dry kibble mixed with a small amount of cooked beef, turkey and chicken. He's a picky eater due to this issue. Treats should consist of cooked meat only.
