About CARMEN

CARMEN was saved from a high kill shelter in Texas, where dogs generally have just 3 days to be saved before they are killed for space. CARMEN is spayed, core vaccines, rabies, de-wormed, heartworm tested negative and micro-chipped. She has an estimated date of birth of 17 January 2017 and weighs around 68.00 pounds. She has been listed as a German Shepherd Dog Mix. We have no way of knowing the exact breed, so it is up to individuals to decide what breed they think is most likely. Carmen was scheduled to be killed the day that we saved her, she is fearful of humans, but not in an aggressive way. When she is touched she flinches as if she is expecting to be hit or beaten. She is slowly getting used to me scratching her ears and rubbing on her neck and is now enjoys when i go in her kennel and spend time with her. She has a lot of potential to be a fun, active, loving girl, she just needs a family that understands she has had a very bad start to life and with patience, time, love and understanding, in her own time she will learn to trust and start to enjoy the life that she deserves. It is important to note the German Shepherds need alpha humans, if they do not respect and listen to their humans, then they will step up to the alpha role, so this is something for any family to strongly consider. Carmen is a high energy girl and will need lots of mental stimulation, and physical exercise, road trips and adventures to new places are good options. Carmen does use the dog door to go out to do her business or enjoy the fresh air in her run. I do not know if she would let you know she needs to go out since she has 24/7 access to the outside, but she is extremely smart and do not think it would take long to learn. Carmen is great with other dogs she interacts good with her kennel neighbours and loves to drag out her blanket and play tug of war through the fence with the other dogs. She has not shown any sign of aggression at all. We do not have cats or livestock at the rescue so cannot comment on how she would be near or around them. She needs an active family, I have not seen her with children, but her demeanor and personality I have no doubt that she would be great with them and a lot of fun too. As with all rescue's she needs guidance and training and we recommend families go through at least the basics of training with her themselves so that boundaries, personalities and body language can be learned from each other. This of course will need to be taken at a slow space as she gains trust with her new family. ��%BD'��%BD��%BDWe do not recommend dog parks for several weeks, if not months, it is so very important for families and dogs to form a strong bond and get to know each other before exposing them to the potential dangers of dog parks. Although all GaDaH dogs are very well socialized with other dogs, lots of other dogs have not had the benefit of this socialization and do not always know how to play and act with other dogs. You also do not know the control the other families have over their dogs and you should always have a good recall for your adopted dog before going to dog parks. CARMEN is available for adoption for an adoption fee of $550. Canadian adopters need to know that customs charge 15% taxes when entering into Canada. This fee is not negotiable and is used to cover the rescue costs of pulling, vetting, health certificate, transport from Texas to Maine, monthly preventatives, supplements, food and anything else that is needed. We post in various states along the east coast and Canada where we have had lots of successful adoptions to enable more exposure for these beautiful saved souls. Families will need to be prepared to travel to the rescue to meet and take home their new best friend. Sebec is located just outside the towns of Dover-Foxcroft and Milo (approx 8 miles) and approx 45 miles from Bangor. There are also lots of hotels, motels, pet friendly accommodations and wonderful camp-sites for the more adventurous families and what a great way to get to know your new best friend. If there are options to arrange transport, we will work with you to make it happen.
