About Oscar

Adoption Fee: $25
American Staffordshire Terrier / Staffordshire Bull Terrier
Age: Puppy
Sex: Male

How to describe Oscar? Marshmallow. Big baby.Wigglebutt. Oscar has experienced misery and abandonment, yet the gentle eyes brighten when approached by visitors and the butt will furiously wiggle in hopes of attention. Four months have passed since Oscar came into our care in Jan 2018. He grows in playfulness with his caregivers and expresses his affection for their attention. His face lights up when a tennis ball is brought out for some serious fetch and return fun. Oscar recently was living in a world far removed from the current one. Now he is safe and receiving overdue medical attention as well as recovering emotionally from previous neglect and abandonment. Oscar's eyes are soft and kind. Yet they have viewed the world from a pit of misery where he was living throughout the winter in a pen deep in mud with raining/freezing conditions from which there was no escape. His response to affection is one of overwhelming relief and a desire to show his gratitude by offering a paw and to gently take treats followed by generous slathering of sloppy kisses. His spirit has struggled with abandonment when left behind by his family and at the mercy of brutal weather. A relative became aware of the situation and brought him to our shelter. At one time Oscar lived indoors and enjoyed life with the children of the household. What brought him to such an end after what seemed to be a caring home is a mystery. But for every animal who enters our shelter, endings are beginnings. He is 4 1/2 years old, of medium build at 59 pounds. He is very smart and appears to have learned some basic commands. Applications are being accepted as we seek the home which will provide him with the love which will put a sparkle in those gentle eyes. A home with a secure fence that is in place at time of adoption is required. Oscar was neutered shortly after his arrival and fully vetted. Initially he did not always respond well to a few of the bigger male dogs which towered over him. He is now mostly excited at the approach of other dogs and will go into a playful crouch anticipating friendship. We do not believe he is a good match for kitties. He loves people of all sizes. Oscar has a sponsor who subsidized his fee to $25. Application can be submitted online at: https://www.charlessmithgallhumanesociety.org/page/dog-adoption-application/ or at the shelter. Videos at: 1. https://youtu.be/uXGGXR_qJn4 2. https://youtu.be/DvfFliX1AP4 3. https://youtu.be/XIaVEzirME8 Adoption of all dogs/cats requires an approval process to ensure that they are going into a home appropriate for their needs and that will keep them safe. The process can take 1 to 3 days and for anyone traveling a distance to meet a dog/cat, it is suggested that the process be done first so that the applicant will know if they are approved to adopt. Each of our residents is loved and nurtured by our staff and volunteers during their stay with us and each is placed with same due diligence that they would be given if they were our own family members. Adoption policies and application procedures are at the shelter website: http://smithgallhumanesociety.org/ under tab All Adoptable Animals. All approved adopters must come to the shelter and accompany their new family member on the journey home. We do not ship nor do we transport. Charles Smithgall Humane Society (CSHS) is a No kill shelter which provides quality care, spay/neuter-all vaccines, deworming, vet exam, standard disease testing and for dogs-monthly heart worm prevention treatment. Animals in our care remain safe with us until adopted. Resident animals are primarily owner relinquished and also accepted from local Animal Control. The facility usually is operating at capacity with a list of animals waiting for space to open. Adoption hours are Tues-Sat 10-4 and Sun 1-4.
