About Bamboo

Lab / German Shepherd
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Bamboo looked every bit the stray as he came into a high-kill shelter in Texas. It was possible that this beautiful 55 lb, 2.5 year old Labrador Retriever/German Shepherd (with the most expressive and trusting dark eyes ever) had never had a bath in his life. They're treated so poorly and disrespectfully'|and then disposed of when their perceived use is over. But Bamboo is strong and his sweetness and great personality always shines through. Bamboo had always been a huge shelter favorite from the moment he was processed until he was lucky enough to leave the shelter. When he was scheduled for euthanasia due to lack of space, shelter staff immediately created a plea to save his life. The plea said the following: It's truly Bamboo's absolute last chance today. We've begged, literally begged, for one more day for this amazing dog. Why? Because he is absolutely fabulous! It's not just me that thinks so (and I've never written a recommendation like this for any other dog in my 18 years at the shelter)..it's all of us. The moment we get to the shelter in the morning, Bamboo is our high! We hug him and he hugs us back with the biggest smile on his goofy face. He spends the day in the office sleeping on our feet or taking long walks just to enjoy the day. When we heard about Bamboo's pending euthanasia, we were all visibly shaken knowing it was going to be his last day on Earth. I can't even express how thrilled we all were when we heard that Bamboo was saved by Farfel's Rescue. He will be the best friend any family can possibly have! None of us will ever forget Bamboo's gentle nature, kindness and super-smarts. We are so excited to wish Bamboo the greatest life (for the greatest dog) in Colorado! Love you Bamboo! Bamboo is currently in a foster home in the Denver area. His foster mom had the following to say about this wonderful dog: Bamboo would be a great fit for an older couple or individual that has the time to spend with him. With training classes this will be an exceptional dog! He already knows commands...he'll give both paws to hi-5, sits and lies down. It's obvious that someone has worked with and really loved Bamboo. Like most Lab/Shepherd mixes, Bamboo is extremely loyal and loves his family more than anything! He has been very loving and sweet towards me but also wants to protect me if he senses any danger. On walks, Bamboo is completely leash-trained and doesn't pull at all..again a definite sign that someone worked with him in a positive way. Bamboo is a world-class hiker, and if you're seeking a best friend, Bamboo will be overjoyed to accept the job! When at home, even if he's alone while I'm at work, Bamboo keeps to his bed and plays with his own toys. He never destroys shoes, clothing items or anything at all. Bamboo doesn't jump on the counter or beg for food (this makes him very easy to spend time with). He's an extremely smart dog that would be a dream come true for a quiet family that doesn't frequently have lots of people coming and going. Like most Lab/Shepherd mixes, Bamboo is extremely loyal and loving to his loved ones. I would advise against adopting Bamboo out to a family with young kids or a cat, as he seems uncomfortable with both. He's also not a party guy...definitely more comfortable in a quiet, uncomplicated environment. If an adopter likes having lots of people over, that would be stressful for Bamboo. He could be fine with an older, like-sized dog but doesn't seem to be comfortable with the more frenetic energy of smaller dogs. Bamboo tends to protect his loved ones (again, very typical of a bonded Shep)...a positive reinforcement trainer can give advice to teach Bamboo skills around this. It is Bamboo's love affair with life and the hardships that he's suffered along the way that motivates us to put him through Heartworm treatments..Bamboo's precious life deserves to be saved! Bamboo has tested HW+ and Farfel's (with the help of Dr G in Denver) has volunteered to save this very special dog's life. The heart worm treatment process involves several shots followed by a short period of quiet time for the dog. We have found this protocol to be very successful and the dogs go on to live long, happy lives. We are seeking an adopter to lovingly care for Bamboo as he becomes Heartworm negative. It's quite an easy rehab process as it only entails mellow time with soft words and belly rubs. Farfel's will pay the vet bills and provide premium food and treats for this special guy as he becomes healthily heartworm-free. Bamboo is in a foster home in the Denver area. Applications are currently being accepted and can be found at http://farfels.com/farfels-rescue/adoption-form/. If you're interested in this extremely sweet, cuddly and fun-loving best friend, please fill out our adoption application and submit.
