About BETSY - $300

Adoption Fee: $550
Pointer / Lab

BETSY was saved with her son, Bobby from a high kill shelter in Texas, where dogs generally have just 3 days to be saved before they are killed for space. BETSY is spayed, core vaccines, rabies, de-wormed, heartworm tested negative and micro-chipped. She has an estimated date of birth of 10 March 2016 and at the time of rescue in March 2018 weighed around 46 pounds. Betsy has been listed as a Pointer Mix, however, we are not able to say for sure what breed she is, it is up to you to look at her pictures and decide what you think she looks like. When Betsy arrived at the rescue I brought her up in to the house with her puppy Bobby since they was recovering from Demodex mange, a non-contagious skin infection. Both mum and pup settled in great and are happy and comfortable in the house with the other dogs. BETSY's skin infection has cleared up and her hair is coming through wonderfully, it will just be another month or so before it has fully grown back in, but she is looking amazing from how she was when we initially saved her. BETSY loves to be near her humans and is extremely affectionate. Initially she didn't want other dogs to come near me, however, after some correction she soon learnt that she would get her fair share of love. Her puppy has been adopted and she is longing for a family of her own to love and adore. Betsy loves toys especially squeaky toys and will take one on the dog bed and play with it for hours, she also enjoys chewing on the hooves and horns and although will try to take them from other dogs, if they do not let her, she respects that and will go and find something else to play with or chew on. I think a lot of this behaviour is just from the horrible life she has previously had and now she is starting to feel good and getting lots of attention and cuddles she doesn't want to risk losing that, which is understandable. She is extremely responsive and knows I am alpha and responds to when I tel her 'no'. She is a very smart girl. She loves to chase the squirrels and wild animals running up and down the fence, watching them waiting for them to move and then she will take off following them (within the fenced in area). She can spot a squirrel in the woods from a good distance and just bounds over to where the squirrel was or creature was. She is so much fun to watch as she has so much fun. Betsy does use the dog door to go out to do her business or enjoy the fresh air. I do not know if she would let you know she needs to go out since she has 24/7 access to the outside, but she is extremely smart and do not think it would take long to learn. She has a lot of energy and so she will need an active family. Someone who understands the importance of mental stimulation as well as physical exercise. I have not seen her with children, but her demeanor and personality I have no doubt that she would be great with them and a lot of fun too. She needs guidance and training and we recommend families go through at least the basics of training with her themselves so that boundaries, personalities and body language can be learned from each other. Betsy rides good in the car. She is used to being with other dogs so a family with another dog would be great, however, if that is not the case, then play-dates with other dogs would be extremely beneficial for her. We do not have cats or livestock at the rescue so cannot comment on how she would be near or around them. As with all rescue's she needs guidance and training and we recommend families go through at least the basics of training with her themselves so that boundaries, personalities and body language can be learned from each other. Betsy needs an active family and one that will keep her mind stimulated and challenged. Lots of hikes and adventures, training tricks, or agility, dock diving or other fun, active, stimulating activities would be perfect for this girl. We do not have cats at the rescue so we cannot say how she would be around them, however, I am not sure I would trust her with them since she has a high working drive. She is great with humans and I believe would be great with children, I am sure they could keep each other entertained for many hours. %BD'%BD%BDWe do not recommend dog parks for several weeks, if not months, it is so very important for families and dogs to form a strong bond and get to know each other before exposing them to the potential dangers of dog parks. Although all GaDaH dogs are very well socialized with other dogs, lots of other dogs have not had the benefit of this socialization and do not always know how to play and act with other dogs. You also do not know the control the other families have over their dogs and you should always have a good recall for your adopted dog before going to dog parks. Betsy is available for adoption from Give a Dog a Home, German Shepherd Dog Rescue for an adoption fee of $550.
