Yorkie

Meet Opie. He is estimated to be 8 years old and weighs approximately 5.9 lbs. Sadly, Sweet Opie is heartworm positive. He is being fostered in Ocala, FL. UPDATED BIO 06/21/2018:Here's what little Opie had to say recently: Hi, Opie here. I wanted to give my fan club a quick update. I went to the doctor last week and had my first heartworm injection. I have to brag and tell you I was a trooper. I was not sore after the injection, but I was a little tired. I slept in my foster mommy's lap all the way home and then my foster mommy and I both took a nap when we arrived home. She said that I need to get lots and lots of rest and I have to be calm and quiet. Sounds good to me! The doctor said I have to come back in one month for two more injections. Hopefully, at that time, the injections will be over and done with. I will then be re-tested for heartworms in another month. If everything goes okay, I will get neutered and have my teeth cleaned'|'|. and '|'| here's the B-I-G news!! I will finally be ready for my forever family. I am so excited because I can't wait to find my forever family. I know you are out there waiting for me because I am one special little boy. UPDATED BIO 05/21/2018: Sweet Opie is one of 26 dogs pulled by a sister rescue group from a horrendous hoarding/backyard breeding situation today. He is one of the 10 dogs that came into United Yorkie Rescue. Here's what Opie had to say today: Opie here. I have been in my foster home for 4 weeks now. I didn't know humans could be so nice. My foster mom has this thing she calls a doggie sling. She puts me in that and holds me while she works on the computer - how cool is that? She also has a huge bed that me and my fur brothers are allowed to sleep in. I cuddle so close to my foster mom that she is unable to move. I wake my foster mom up every day with kisses because I am so happy to be in my new home. I love my foster mom - a lot - but there is something missing. As soon as I finish my heartworm treatment and then go to the doctor to get my teeth cleaned and 'tutored' (I think that is what my foster mom said), I would love to have a forever home. My foster mom tells me that I am the cutest little cuddle bug and that I would make a great addition to my forever home.UPDATED BIO 04/21/2018: Opie is one of 26 dogs pulled by a sister rescue group from a horrendous hoarding/backyard breeding situation today. He is one of the 10 dogs that came into United Yorkie Rescue. Opie is adjusting well in his foster home and loves his fur-brothers. They are older and calm - just what Opie needs. None of the dogs from this horrible situation were house-trained or leash-trained, so foster mom is working with him on and he is showing progress. Opie is a little love bug who loves to be held and give kisses. He also likes to sleep in bed with his foster mom and fur-brothers. Foster mom says that he is a quiet and well-behaved little boy. Opie has received his vaccinations, but still needs to be neutered and have his teeth cleaned. He will not be able to have those things done until he has been treated for heartworms. Opie loves his foster mom and the other dogs in the home, but he is looking forward to the time he can be adopted and go to his furever family. PLEASE NOTE the following special circumstances: - Due to Opie's small size, he cannot be adopted into a home with children; Opie needs an adult-only home. No exceptions will be made. - Adoption applications are being accepted for Opie; however, please keep in mind that he has tested positive for heartworms. This means that Opie must endure 4-5 months of heartworm treatment before he can go into his forever home. UYR follows the recommended treatment protocol provided by the American Heartworm Society. Heartworm Treatment is very expensive and will cost approximately $800-$1,000 per dog. Currently, 4 out of the 10 dogs taken in with Opie tested positive for heartworms. Please consider a donation to help UYR continue to rescue and rehabilitate other dogs with heartworms. - Please be patient with our process in considering adoption applications for Opie as our primary interest is supporting him during his heartworm treatment. Once Opie has completed treatment, he will be altered and have a dental. Our primary goal at this time is getting Opie healthy so that he can continue to enjoy a wonderful life in a loving, forever home. - UYR is reaching out to our friends, supporters and generous donors in the hopes of raising the thousands of dollars it will cost our group to get Opie healthy, as well as the 9 other dogs from the same hoarding/backyard breeding situation. They not only need to have their vaccinations updated, be neutered or spayed and have extensive labs, but they also need to emotionally heal from years of neglect. For the ones that are HW+, they will soon begin treatment which will last 4-5 months. If you have been moved by Opie's story and his courage and resilience, please consider making a
