Pillow Top's story is quite remarkable. Rescued from a rural shelter, we thought it would be your 'run of the mill' large dog adoption. But little did we know what lay ahead. This beautiful yellow Retriever mix had a chronic runny nose and had experienced a few seizures. She tested positive for Ehrlichia and Lymes disease. She was placed on antibiotics and treated for suspect kennel cough and her tick disease. With no improvement after several weeks, she was referred to the specialty veterinary clinic for additional imaging of her skull. But we were not prepared for what we discovered'|Pillow Top had been shot. Her face was filled with shrapnel. Her nasal passages were scarred down and she couldn't breathe through her nose. She had a chronic 'headache' and nasal discharge that would not resolve on its own. But there was hope'|. a caring group of veterinarians shared her story and solicited the help of a human surgeon that had experience with facial trauma. A date was set and the group of doctors joined forces to open an airway for Pillow Top. Another CT and endoscopy showed exactly the surgical approach needed and the team went to work. Several hours later, the surgeons had opened an airway for Pillow Top. Fragments of bone were removed and a stent was placed. She recovered uneventfully and was released from the veterinary hospital the following day. Dogs are AMAZING. Eating, walking, and demanding to be pet, Pillow Top was her tolerant wonderful self. She is now on the 'up and up', taking anti-inflammatories and antibiotics until everything is healed. She is eating scrambled eggs, soft food, and is basically acting like a Retriever again. Third night home from the hospital, she discovered the leftover Caesar salad and breadsticks on the counter - managing to scatter crumbs and foil across the kitchen floor. She loves basking in the sunshine and is the PERFECT house pet. She is housebroken, loves all dogs, is trustworthy in the house, adores children, knows how to ride in the car, walks well on a leash, and is a gentle giant. She represents all the goodness of doctors coming together both from the human and veterinary side to make life better for one simple dog. She was well worth the effort and the thousands of dollars spent. Miss Pillow Top deserves a very special home and we are confident one is out there.
