About Zack

Rottweiler
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Back in December 2017 we found Zack on the euthanasia list at the county pound. He was having a very hard time standing up on his own and was doing very little walking. The shelter xrayed his hips at our request and X-rays showed that his hips were an awful mess. He had severe hip dysplasia. We rescued Zack from being killed and we immediately took him to our vet. Our vet said that the only thing that would help Zack would be surgery on both hips. There are several different hip surgeries that could be done to correct the problem and we choose to have an FHO surgery done on Zack. Zack's foster mom had a dog of her own that had FHO surgery on both hips at the same time and her dog was up and walking the next day and now lives pain free, runs and jumps and plays all day. We asked Zack's vet if Zack could have the surgery done at the same time and he was hesitant but did agree. So right before Christmas, Zack had a double FHO procedure. Probably the worst decision we could have made for him, because Zack came out of surgery with no control over either one of his legs. He could not stand, he could not walk. We had to pick his back end up in a sling to get him outside to go potty. We also put up a zip line so that we could attach the sling to a wire on the zip which gave him a little bit of space and freedom to go where he wanted, along the line. Then we got him a wheelchair and started him in a physical therapy program. About 3 months post surgery, Zack finally took his first steps without assistance. He is an avid swimmer now and goes on frequent short walks to build up the atrophied muscles in his legs. He can now walk independently wherever he wants. He is still building his endurance for distance but can make it all around the house and probably 200 feet outside without resting. While Zack was with his first foster mom before his surgery, we learned that Zack is good with women, and some men, but not all. He is also good with chickens, horses, house birds and cats and most dogs. Zack is far from perfect but with the use of a swimming pool, he is well on his way to living a normal life. We would like his new forever home to have a pool so that he can continue with regular exercise throughout the summer. Check out Zack's long road to recovery in these youtube videos. This is Zack the day we brought him home from the pound. He had just met the other dogs in the video about 10 min prior to recording it. https://youtu.be/4c-QnXmWL7Y Here is a video of Zack after surgery struggling https://youtu.be/mIwlB0ODjZ0. Here is a video that was taken on March 15th hopefully it will play for you. https://www.facebook.com/rottenrottie/videos/1649229021793298/ He is even much stronger and walking straighter today. If you truly want to make a difference in a dog's life, nobody needs you more than Zack. He is potty trained, crate trained, sweet as pie and is as stubborn as the best of them! If you are interested in meeting Zack please go to http://www.rottenrottie.com/adoption.html and fill out the adoption questionnaire under the forms tab and return it to us. We will contact you once we have had a chance to look it over and let you know which dogs may be a good fit for you and your lifestyle. We think that Zack would do well with a retired single person or couple. He makes an awesome guard dog and would give his life to keep you safe. He is fearless. He's a rottweiler down to the core! Loyal, intelligent, stubborn a courageous. We look forward to working with you
