About Remus

Akita / Golden Retriever
Age: Puppy
Sex: Male

Remy was rescued by my daughter at 5 months in very poor health. He lived alone with her and a housemate for 4 months where he became increasingly more aggressive toward strangers in his territory. At 9 months he witnessed a crisis in their home involving EMTs and the removal by stretcher of a person from the home. At that point we brought him to our home with another dog and cat. His aggression toward strangers became stronger over the next two months. At 11 months he lunged at and attempted to bit a very good friend of the family whom he had met several times before. No injury occurred but clothing was torn. We hired a trainer who said he was extremely willful and protective of his family. With family members and other animals he is extremely loving. On walks and at dog parks he is well behaved and actually somewhat submissive. The aggressive tendency continued until my mother-in-law came to live with us because she broke her ankle. She visited frequently so she was not a stranger. Two weeks into her stay my husband was helping her and for whatever reason Remy attacked. My husband saw it coming and intervened. The dog bit my husband's hand. No stitches necessary. My daughter brought him to a Vet to insure there was not anything physical causing his behavior. There is not. They discussed options and after much consideration and attempts to re-home the dog the decision was made that we had to put him down. My son who lives in a remote area and alone with another dog decided to take him and give him a second chance. A little over a month later a friend of my son went to visit him and she (also not a complete stranger to the dog) was interacting with the dog. He suddenly lunged at her and nicked her lip. Again, no stitches necessary. We went back to the Vet to schedule euthanasia and found that there was a 14 day quarantine period or we had to have his head CUT OFF and sent to the State Lab...no thanks! So we are waiting the quarantine period and he is scheduled to be put down on Saturday, April 28th. This is a very difficult thing to do! Remy is a loving, fun, and silly puppy. He is loyal and protective of his family to a fault. We do not have the skills necessary to train him and help him overcome his anxiety/fear of strangers. We do not know what happened to him in the first 5 months of his life but it could not have been good. We do know that the episode with the EMTs and the ambulance taking his master away for several weeks has left a lasting impression on him. Anyone with the skills to train this loving dog, PLEASE CONSIDER SAVING HIS LIFE! Thank you!
