About Bert

Adoption Fee: $250
Border Collie mix
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Meet Bert! Bert is a beautiful 65 lb cattle dog mix, with a bit of a rough start in life. He grew up completely unsocialized in an orchard in the Central Valley of California. He shared the orchard with a few wild dogs and a colony of feral cats. He was eventually trapped and since then he has resided at the Kings County Animal Shelter. The staff made every effort to socialize and befriend Bert, but he was very afraid in his kennel. Potential adopters passed Bert by and didn't pay him any mind because he was so reluctant to interact. The director of the shelter reached out to a foster family to see if Bert could become a temporary member of their family. Bert has lived with his foster family since February 2018. Bert shares his foster home with two rowdy boys (6 and 3 years old), 4 cats, and 3 large breed dogs. He was introduced slowly and gets along well with everyone. He plays well with the dogs, ignores the cats (even when they rub all over him), and generally ignores the crazy kids (they ignore him as well). Bert's foster family loves him and he's welcome to stay as long as he needs. He is crate trained, potty trained, mellow, leash trained, and knows how to sit. Once Bert is given the chance to acclimate to his new surroundings he settles in quite nicely. He loves to follow his person around and lay on the floor near them. Bert would do well in a calmer environment where he's allowed to become comfortable on his terms. He still needs some work when it comes to new faces and furry friends, he needs to go slowly. He would do best in a home that is familiar and experienced with dogs like him, and of course a home that's willing to spoil him with treats and willing to take a bit of time to ease him into new situations. He needs help building his confidence, and ongoing training will provide excellent scaffolding for that and other things, like recall and commands. Bert's favorite pastimes are relaxing, playing with his foster brothers and sisters, long walks, and learning to be a dog and chase balls and play with toys! Do you think you might be a good candidate for Bert? He is waiting to hear from you!
