~MEET JASPER ~ COURTESY POST ~ Hai guys! My name is Jasper and I've spent the first 5 years of my life just trying to fit in and be a dog. I am great at basic doggo things like general commands, playing with toys, and enjoying pet-pets! I absolutely love car rides and going on adventures. I am a companion at heart and am my happiest and best-behaved when it is just me and my humans. While I do love humans, I am recovering from prior abandonments. I am not aggressive, but I am most comfortable without other dogs around me. I will get overwhelmed if another dog tries to play with me because I was never taught how to play. This means I can defensively react to make myself feel safe and give myself space. I can co-exist with another dog as long as that other dog shows little interest in me. Typically, older female dogs and I get along fairly well. Understanding this is key to making sure we have a great life together, especially because I will always prefer you to another dog! Because I've had to be so independent, I tend to explore and let curiosity lead the way. I do well off leash and come when called, but sometimes I can find treasures that I am not supposed to have. I like to scavenge! When that happens, using verbal deterrents instead of physical deterrents will be best for both of us. Verbal approaches are more effective with me since physical approaches can make me feel threatened. If you re-direct my focus, I will abandon that treasure and happily engage with a more appropriate treat. I am house broken and crate trained! I am also vaccinated and fixed. I had heartworms earlier this year (hence the shaved area on my back), but my foster humans made sure I got the right treatment and now I am heartworm free. That means I can run again! WooF! I haven't been around tiny humans (kids) very often, so it is probably best that I live with humans who are old enough to understand how I need to be approached. I like to go outside and sniff, I enjoy having dog chew toys to play with, and I just absolutely love it when someone rubs my ears. I will want to lay next to you as you watch TV and I will always join you for a car ride. I thrive on affection and return it! I am a sweet boy, I am teachable, and I am eager to learn more skills! I fear being neglected again, so I need someone who is committed to genuinely loving me, being patient with me, and including me as family. In return, I will unconditionally love you, respect you, and be your best friend.
