About Nitro

Adoption Fee: $30
American Staffordshire Terrier / Collie
Age: Adult
Sex: Male

This is Nitro. Nitro is a 5 year old pit bull mix (with collie, chow chow and a few others). He is completely house trained, affectionate as can be, walks well on and off a leash, knows sit, down, and shake, and will sometimes listen if you tell him to wait. We haven't really used a crate much but he seems fine when we do use one. He knows how to use a doggy door but is fine left home alone without one. He is sometimes home alone up to ten hours during the day and just sleeps the whole time. He has free range at our house when we leave and has never destroyed anything or gotten into anything he shouldn't. He is a couch potato who would love nothing more than to cuddle up to you on the couch and be petted. Even though he loves to sleep he loves to get out and run off leash and play as well. We don't have other pets but I think he would do well in a home with another dog, although he can sometimes play rough, so maybe not small dogs. We haven't had him around cats. He is an amazing dog when he's home with the people he knows. Unfortunately Nitro is a very anxious dog, and does not like new situations and can be nervous around new people. In the past he has lunged at two different strangers to him (adults) who bent down in his area, and tried to bite them. He also just doesn't really know how to act around children and seems to think they are trying to play with him. Although nobody has actually been injured beyond minor scratches, we are due with our first child in June, so we took him to a behavioral specialist who said he is not safe to have around children and basically recommended that he be put down because it will be impossible to find a home that fits his needs. I know that it will be difficult, but I would like to try to find a home for this amazing dog. We have started him on anxiety meds, and would recommend whoever gets him continue them. He would need an adults only home and someone who would understand the need to use caution with him around strangers. If someone is willing to take him in, we would be willing to pay for some training to help with the transition and some of his issues. We can also help with the cost of his medications if needed. He is an amazing dog and it kills us to have to give him up, but we cannot take a risk with our child. I could talk for hours about this sweet boy so please reach out with questions.
