Gracie shih tzu mix 18.5 lbs 9 years old. Gracie was pulled from a high kill shelter in CA quite some time ago as she needed out oh so desperately & was an absolute mess physically & psychologically, we got Gracie out & we believed she could of been used as puppy making machine from the state her body was in & her attitude, very sad. Gracie was taken straight to our vets & got all the medical she needed. Since Gracie has been in the rescue she just had another dental, is spayed, chipped, up to date on her shots & heart worm negative. We had to get Gracie's eye removed as she had become blind & it was causing her problems, Gracie is near sighted in the other eye & is fairly set in her ways. Gracie can still be temperamental and set in her ways. She recently spent 2 months a wonderful trainer & has flourished with the trainer and in her foster home where she has been for a couple months now. Words from Gracie's foster. A lot of Gracie's struggles are showing a lot of improvement. I believe her behavior is based on prerescue traumatic experiences and her startling easily as she cannot often see and hear so allowing her to smell you, floor vibration or a loud clapping to get her attention before touch is a great approach. She is slow to trust but once she does she is a great love. She will get on her spot on the couch and then whimper until you go sit next to her. Then she settles in for her nap. She treats her toys like her babies and takes them to bed with her, often using one as a pillow. She loves her bed next to our bed and being covered with a light blanket when she sleeps. Gracie prefers to not be picked up. She goes up and down stairs and ramps well on and off leash.. She will use a doggy ramp to get in and out of vehicles if available. She does very well with positive reinforcement/treats. Peanut Butter and salmon treats are her cryptonite. With it she is doing better with brushing, will get on the grooming table for it (at ground level). With her vision it seems she fears heights like tables. In home she tolerated being shaved down her back, sides some of her legs and the top of her head for those yummy treats. Sadly because of her past she does not like firm holds but she is showing progress. Once she trusts you, can smell your hand and knows who you are she loves to sit in your lap or cuddle next to you, have her back scratched and she will even play tug with her toys and you. She also enjoys being scratched behind the ears. She loves to go on walks and smell the different areas & gets along great with dogs & cats. She is good on the leash and so loves outings. She gets so happy on car rides especially if you role down the window some to let in new smells. She is much happier with short hair as her long hair will tangle and mat easily, when her hair is short she enjoys brushing and will even sit for them. She is a grumbly girl, sometimes they are happy grumbles others are a 'what is that' grumble and sometimes she is telling you she needs space. Over time, trust building and positive reinforcementment we get less and less of the need space grumbles. They 3 are different sounding. Gracie is doing well on potty training, is happy to hang out with the other dogs if you have to leave and loves to follow you around the house. Gracie can only go to a home with no children, someone who has experience with rescues & temperamental personalities or a home with rescue Shih Tzu experience & another dog present in the home. She will play with the other dogs a bit but mostly seems to be comforted by and enjoy their presence. We will only be accepting applications who meet all of the requirements for Gracie. Gracie is currently in a foster home & it's time for Gracie to find her new forever home & can only go to a home with other dogs present in the home, someone who will work with her on potty training & training like all of her doggy friends & love & cherish her & someone present in the home during the day. Please only submit an application if you are truly interested in adopting Gracie & have read her listing fully to the end & going through our process of your references being checked, a phone interview & a home visit followed with a meet & greet if it's a good fit with our discretion. We also cannot respond to every application unfortunately. Gracie has an adoption fee of $450. Like most dogs in our rescue, Gracie will need work on potty training. __________________________ **IMPORTANT DETAILS - PLEASE READ** An application must be filled out before consideration for adoption.
