KYLE (Chihuahua/Terrier mix) - AVAILABLE! Only $45 adoption!!! This adorable little man was surrendered to a local shelter because the previous owners were unable to care for him. Kyle was one of 15 dogs from that home. He was born on the property and kept as an outside dog his whole life. Never knowing the comfort of a warm bed, or what it feels like to be part of a family. He was never taken for a walk, or ever even taken off the property. While at the shelter, he showed fear, which landed him on their euthanasia list. That is when Safe Haven stepped in. Despite the hard life he has lived, he is a super sweet, affectionate little man. He is so cute, when he was first learning to come when called, he would run up to me and cuddle on my feet. It was so endearing and just made me want to scoop him up and kiss him! The previous owner said he loves the plush toys & playing tug of war, but I have not seen that here. If I throw a ball or toy for him, he will chase it and get excited, but doesn't even pick it up. Perhaps because they had so many dogs, they got confused as to what dog liked what... I know him as a sweet, affectionate cuddle bug that is a laid back kind of guy who likes to sunbathe. He loves to hang out on the couch, or cuddle in bed with you. So far Kyle has learned the words No, Come, Inside (to go in the crate), & Outside (to go out and do his business), and Sit. PLEASE NOTE: All of the pets at Safe Haven receive basic training when they come here. All adopters will be given a list of words that your new pet knows at the time of adoption. What each pet learns depends on how much time I have had to work with them, & if that pet has any additional issues that need to be focused on first. The pets here are always improving. Birthday: 11/7/11 Weight at last Vet visit: 9 lbs. (he was underweight when he first got here, but a dog this size only needs to gain ounces to fill out) Cats: Yes, he is good with cats. He might go up and sniff them to see who they are, but after that he doesn't really pay much attention to them. Small Dogs: He has been great with every dog he has met. He lived with 15 other dogs at his last home and is very confident around dogs. He will go right up and greet them and is very friendly with other dogs. Sometimes he runs around and plays with them. I'm going to start taking him to the dog park. Large Dogs: He has been great with every dog he has met. He lived with 15 other dogs at his last home and is very confident around dogs, even large ones. He will go right up and greet them and is very friendly with other dogs. I would say though that any large dog should be on the mellow side. I have a playful Mastiff, and he cuddles with her, but when she tries to play with him, it scares him and he just wants to get away from her. Kids: Previous owner said he is friendly with kids Men: Loving and affectionate Women: Loving and affectionate Strangers: Friendly Food: I feed all the dogs on a rotational diet. Which means they get a different brand of high quality food each month. I do this because I do not think that one brand can provide all the nutrients that they need. Just like one food can't provide us with all that we need...Plus, who wants to eat the same thing every day? All dogs are fed breakfast (7 am) & dinner (6:30 pm), & are trained to eat out of their own bowl. He has been on Merrick Back Country Raw Infused. He gets a heaping 1/4 cup for breakfast and again for dinner for a total of a little over a 1/2 cup of dry food a day. Plus for dinner, I add 1 tsp. organic coconut oil, 1 tsp. Missing Link food supplement for skin and coat, some 'The Honest Kitchen' mix, and some type of fruit or veggie. Kyle is a great eater and has eaten everything I have given him. Crate Trained: Yes, he will go in when asked ('Inside') and will hold it until you let him out to go outside. All my foster dogs are crated at night, and when I am not home. It's funny, because his crate is next to Petunias', and when I say 'Inside', he goes in her crate with her. Then I say, 'No Kyle, next door', and he'll go out of her crate and next door in to his, lol. To cute! House Trained: I would say he is 95% trained. He uses the doggy door here, and usually goes outside on his own. You need to make sure he goes out on a regular basis though, otherwise he holds it because he wants to stay in with you. So I make sure he goes out every 4 hrs during the day. He knows the word 'Outside' and will go out and do his business when you tell him to. He does the chicken scratch after he does his business. Leash Trained: Taking Kyle for a walk is more like a lazy stroll. He is slow, and likes to stop and sniff things and casually inch his way down the road. He is more of a couch potato and would fit better with someone who is looking for a cuddle buddy. Car: He's great in the car. Other issues: He shows signs of having been hit in the past, and anytime he thinks he is in trouble,
