About HERSHEY

Adoption Fee: $550
Dachshund
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

HERSHEY was saved from a high kill shelter in Texas, where dogs generally have just 3 days to be saved before they are killed for space. Hershey is neutered, core vaccines, rabies, de-wormed, heartworm tested negative and micro-chipped. He has an estimated date of birth of 3 March 2016 and at the time of rescue in March 2018 weighed around 19.50 pounds. HERSHEY has been listed as a Miniature Dachshund, however, we are not able to say for sure what breed he is, it is up to you to look at his pictures and decide what you think he looks like. Hershey is living in the small dog area with his buddies and is having a great time. He is definitely a social boy who loves being alive. He likes to play with toys and chase and wrestle with his buddies, but also any chance to cuddle and be with humans he is right up there. He does use the dog door to go out and play or do his business and has not had any accidents inside. He might not know to let you know he needs to go out, since he has 24/7 access with the dog doors, but he is a smart boy and a quick learner. He is very responsive and has never shown any kind of aggression with other dogs, humans, toys or food. Although a small dog, he does have a lot of energy and so he will need a relatively active family, I have not seen him with children, but his demeanor and personality I have no doubt that he would be great with them and a lot of fun too. He needs guidance and training and we recommend families go through at least the basics of training with him themselves so that boundaries, personalities and body language can be learned from each other. Hershey rides good in the car. He can be vocal when he is playing, but that is really him just having fun. He is used to being with other dogs so a family with another dog would be great, however, if that is not the case, then play-dates with other dogs would be extremely beneficial for him. We do not have cats or livestock at the rescue so cannot comment on how he would be near or around them. As with all rescue's he needs guidance and training and we recommend families go through at least the basics of training with him themselves so that boundaries, personalities and body language can be learned from each other. 'We do not recommend dog parks for several weeks, if not months, it is so very important for families and dogs to form a strong bond and get to know each other before exposing them to the potential dangers of dog parks. Although all GaDaH dogs are very well socialized with other dogs, lots of other dogs have not had the benefit of this socialization and do not always know how to play and act with other dogs. You also do not know the control the other families have over their dogs and you should always have a good recall for your adopted dog before going to dog parks. Hershey is available for adoption from Give a Dog a Home, German Shepherd Dog Rescue for an adoption fee of $550. This fee is not negotiable and is used to cover the rescue costs of pulling, vetting, health certificate, transport from Texas to Maine, monthly preventatives, supplements, food and anything else that is needed. Please do NOT submit an application if you are not looking to take home a new best friend within the next few weeks. http://www.giveadogahome-sanantonio.org HERSHEY is located at the rescue in Sebec, Maine. We post in various states along the east coast and Canada where we have had lots of successful adoptions to enable more exposure for these beautiful saved souls. Families will need to be prepared to travel to the rescue to meet and take home their new best friend. Sebec is located just outside the towns of Dover-Foxcroft and Milo (approx 8 miles) and approx 45 miles from Bangor. There are also lots of hotels, motels, pet friendly accommodations and wonderful camp-sites for the more adventurous families and what a great way to get to know your new best friend. If there are options to arrange transport, we will work with you to make it happen.
