About Leeroy

This cute little guy is Leeroy, a Chihuahua mix who is 9 years old and weighs 11 pounds. Sadly, his owner died and their family brought him to a local shelter, where we promptly sprung him. Leeroy is heartworm negative, housebroken and microchipped. He is good with other dogs but has not been tested with children or cats. Based on Leeroy's behavior, we believe he was raised as an outside dog. He is a bit of a loner and doesn't interact with the other dogs at his foster moms home. He prefers to be outside by himself and it can be difficult to get him in the house. He will come in when coerced, but then goes right back out the doggie door. When he see's his foster mom coming, he runs to her with his tail wagging and wants to play, but doesn't want to follow her back in the house. She had to put a crate with blankets and a cover outside to keep him dry, and he's quite happy with that. We have noticed some weakness in his hind legs, with the left one being worse. When running it is unnoticeable, but when standing or walking slow, his leg looks like its ready to give out. Leeroy would not be able to be put in a crate with a door shut. He also is not familiar with a harness or leash, and will just freeze in place. His new family must have a fenced in yard, and a porch or patio would be perfect so that he can continue his outdoor lifestyle that he loves. He has cherry eye right now, but we have him scheduled for getting this corrected at the end of March. Leeroy will be a wonderful companion for someone that will allow him to be himself with his quirks and all.
