Andrew has been in foster care since he was 8 weeks old. He is a 8 pound male Teddy Bear (Bichon Frise/Shih Tzu) born 01/06/17. He has a heart condition called Tetralogy of Fallot. Tetralogy of Fallot is a congenital defect of the heart that involves four abnormalities: ventricular septal defect (a hole between the two ventricles), pulmonic stenosis (obstruction of blood flow through the pulmonary valve), an overriding aorta, and right ventricular hypertrophy (thickening of the heart muscle). The condition results in reverse flow of blood resulting in a lack of oxygenated blood in the circulation. The cardiologist originally said that Andrew would need to see her every 6 months. We visited her at the beginning of Feb for his 6 month check up and we are happy now to report that he can see her once a year unless an issue would arise. This means the meds are working correctly. Yay Andrew takes a 1/4 of a Atenolol pill twice a day which cost less than $0.05 a dose and will need to see a cardiologist once a year ($500.00-$600.00 a visit) for an echo and blood work to ensure the meds are correct. There is no way to determine what Andrew's live expectancy will be as we have been told by the cardiologist, 'it all depends on how well he responds to the medication.' She also stated that she has been treating another dog with the same diagnosis for over 6 years. Andrew should to be in a home with little activity as his activity should be limited, although he doesn't want it to be. Therefore, a home with no small children or young dogs is best for Andrew. He is UTD on all his shots including rabies, bordetella, microchip and flea/heartworm preventative. He is house trained. Andrew can never undergo surgery; therefore, can't be neutered. If interested in giving Andrew his forever home, complete an application found on our website www.gateway4paws.org and email it to [email protected] for consideration. Since we are 100% foster based rescue, only approved applications will be contacted to set up a meet and greet with the fur baby. A in home visit will be done to ensure the home is safe for Andrew. All questions should be emailed to [email protected] Thanks
