About Abby

Adoption Fee: $250
Pit Bull / Beagle
Age: Adult
Sex: Female

This is the story of Abby and of the humans that have failed her, including this very rescue. Abby was born in the rescue on May 7, 2012. The mother dog laid on the puppies and killed some, but Abby and 2 of her siblings survived. Abby was always the best eater and the loudest of all three. She did have some oxygen loss and needed special care, so after the puppies were taken away from their mother, she then had to be taken away from her siblings. Unfortunately, Abby did not get the socialization needed during the crucial puppy developmental stages and to this day can be a bit wary of strangers. She can be a nervous & anxious dog, but absolutely thrives with structure and leadership (and of course some exercise). Abby's first adoptive home lasted for only a few weeks. Things were going great until the dogs were playing and got their collars locked together. In the scuffle of scared dogs and trying to get the collars apart a human was bit (and of course being the newcomer Abby was blamed), so she had to go to quarantine for 10 days. She was so terrified that they were not able to get her out of the kennel for the entire 10 days! DFW Pup Patrol got her back on track and helped her be a happy dog again. Abby's next home seemed promising and lasted almost a year. She was adopted out to an older man who was thoroughly briefed on her energy level and puppiness. He sent her to training for a few weeks and she was doing great, but he realized he was not able to give her the energy outlet she needed at the time and surrendered her back to the rescue. Once again DFW Pup Patrol got her lined back up and ready to try again for that forever home for her. At 2 years old she was even more carefully placed into her 3rd home. This time, for four years things were going great....she had another dog sibling, human siblings, and a family that loved her. Unfortunately her family would not provide her the structure or leadership she needed....no walks, no outings....she was confined to the yard & home. They never followed up with the original trainer to keep up with her training. They had 2 fights towards the end of her forever home with them between the dogs over treats (don't know who started it), and decided to return Abby to the rescue, even declining an offer for free training to try to keep her in her home. Abby is now 6 years old and still can't catch a fair break'|once again looking for that forever family. DFW Pup Patrol feels we are just as much to blame as her previous families. Even with the pre-adoption questionnaire and careful screening of families, we haven't been able to find her that forever committed family. When she was younger and in foster care she lived with 5 other dogs and a cat....there were never any issues because she had exercise, leadership, structure, and a commitment. We absolutely are certain that with a little leadership she can thrive once again. The training Abby has learned was never forgotten, it was just never implemented. She is completely housetrained and crate trained. She loves to play ball and be with her human. She loves to give kisses! She is happy to sleep next to her human's bed in her own doggy bed. She needs and loves a walk or a little ball playtime once a day. She is labeled a Pitbull, but that is not really accurate. DNA tests on her siblings show mostly Beagle, small mixes of other breeds, and a tiny bit of Staffordshire Terrier.
