About Dolly

Adoption Fee: $25
American Shorthair / Domestic Cat
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Female

Dolly has a sponsor who cares and has subsidized her fee to $25 permanently. Dolly quietly waits every day for the person who never comes. 3 years have passed since she came to the shelter in Dec 2014 as a very feral 8 week old kitten. She and her sisters were trapped during the bitter cold of winter to keep them from freezing and starving to death. It would take a long time for Dolly to overcome her fears, to trust people, to believe she was safe and to then slowly respond with affection to the kindness of her caretakers. But she did. While she is still a shy girl, she will greet her caretakers and enjoys their attention. She needs extended time to warm to visitors if they are patient and gentle and even then, may keep her distance unless they become frequent visitors. An adopter has to be aware that her trust is not given quickly but it will come when she is shown gentle kindness and patience. She has never had a home so there is much for her to learn and experience in a new environment with new people. It has been a journey for Dolly to believe in the goodness of people...if only someone would believe in her. She is spayed, fully vaccinated and tested free of FIV/FeLV. More photos in Comments. To submit an application which initiates the approval process, go to the website link: https://www.charlessmithgallhumanesociety.org/page/cat-adoption-application/ or submit at the shelter. The online form may generate a 'Fatal Error' message after submission which is to be ignored. It is a system glitch. Feel free to send an email to check on receipt of the online form. In order to adopt any of our cats/kittens, applicants must intend to keep kitty indoors at all times. Applicants must have the resources to provide the basics of food, shelter, annual vet exam/vaccines/testing as well as non-routine medical care necessary to keep their family member healthy throughout it's lifetime which is generally to age 16. Applicants who have or recently had domestic pets will be asked to provide the contact info for their vet so that a reference check can be obtained regarding the care provided to those pets. If renting, we will talk with the landlord/property manager to ensure the cat is permitted as an indoor pet. If the home of the applicant is within a reasonable travel distance, our adoptions team will schedule a brief home visit and if the home is not local, will request photos/videos to do a virtual home visit. The approval process can be delayed when unable to reach the necessary references and or complete the physical or virtual home visit. Our kitties do not leave our shelter until the approval process is completed favorably. It is not possible to come to the shelter and expect to leave with a kitty if the approval process was not completed favorably in advance. If an applicant has adopted from us within 6 months and has no major concerning changes to their environment, it is possible to adopt on the spot without engaging in the process again. We seek homes that will regard our kitties as family members where they are safe and can live contented and healthy lives. Adoption policies/application procedures are detailed under All Adoptable Animals. Each is placed with same due diligence that they would be given if they were our own furry family members. Adopters who are not within the local area of the shelter MUST come to the shelter to transport their new family member home. Meeting approved adopters is one of the final steps in the adoption process. We do not permit transport or shipping of our residents without the adopter. Charles Smithgall Humane Society (CSHS) is a No kill shelter which provides quality care, spay/neuter-all vaccines, deworming, vet exam, standard disease testing and for dogs-monthly heart worm prevention treatment. Resident animals are owner relinquished and also accepted from local Animal Control. The shelter is not permitted by GA law to accept strays. The facility is usually operating at capacity with a list of animals approved for intake waiting for space to open. Adoption hours are Tues-Sat 10-4 and Sun 1-4.
