About Oscar

Adoption Fee: $25
American Staffordshire Terrier / Staffordshire Bull Terrier
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Oscar has a sponsor who subsidized his fee to $25. A month has past since Oscar came into our care in Jan 2018. He grows in playfulness with his caregivers and expresses his affection for their attention. His face lights up when a tennis ball is brought out for some serious fetch and return fun. Oscar recently was living in a world far removed from the current one. Now he is safe and receiving overdue medical attention as well as recovering emotionally from previous neglect and abandonment. Oscar's eyes are soft and kind. Yet they have viewed the world from a pit of misery where he was living only one month ago in a pen deep in mud with raining/ freezing conditions from which there was no escape. His response to affection is one of overwhelming relief and a desire to show his gratitude by offering a paw and to gently take treats with an appreciative wag of his tail. His spirit has struggled with abandonment when left behind by his family and at the mercy of brutal weather. A relative became aware of the situation and brought him to our shelter. At one time Oscar lived indoors and enjoyed life with the children of the household. What brought him to such an end after what seemed to be a caring home is a mystery. But for every animal who enters our shelter, endings are beginnings. Oscar goes to sleep now on a blanketed cot in a warm kennel with ample food and people who are surrounding him with loving arms and pockets full of treats. He is 4 1/2 years old, of medium build at 59 pounds. He is a Staffordshire Terrier mix. He is very smart and appears to have learned some basic commands. Applications are being accepted as we seek the home which will provide him with the love which will put the light back into those gentle eyes. Oscar arrived in Jan 2017. Shortly thereafter he was fully vetted and tested negative for heartworms. He is still undergoing behavior/skills assessment as he settles into his new environment and recovers from a long over due neutering. A home with a secure fence that is in place at time of adoption is required. A home visit for environment safety is required. At the time of this posting (Feb 7), only homes without dogs/cats will be considered as Oscar still needs to be assessed for compatibility with other animals. His post will be updated after there is more information on his preferences in 4 legged companions. More photos in Comments. Application can be submitted online at: https://www.charlessmithgallhumanesociety.org/page/dog-adoption-application/ or at the shelter. Adoption of all dogs/cats requires an approval process to ensure that they are going into a home appropriate for their needs and that will keep them safe. The process can take 1 to 3 days and for anyone traveling a distance to meet a dog/cat, it is suggested that the process be done first so that the applicant will know if they are approved to adopt. Each of our residents is loved and nurtured by our staff and volunteers during their stay with us and each is placed with same due diligence that they would be given if they were our own family members. Adoption policies and application procedures are at the shelter website: http://smithgallhumanesociety.org/ under tab All Adoptable Animals. All approved adopters must come to the shelter and accompany their new family member on the journey home. We do not ship nor do we transport. Charles Smithgall Humane Society (CSHS) is a No kill shelter which provides quality care, spay/neuter-all vaccines, deworming, vet exam, standard disease testing and for dogs-monthly heart worm prevention treatment. Animals in our care remain safe with us until adopted. Resident animals are primarily owner relinquished and also accepted from local Animal Control. The facility usually is operating at capacity with a list of animals waiting for space to open. Adoption hours are Tues-Sat 10-4 and Sun 1-4.
