About Rocco

Adoption Fee: $50
Lab / English Springer Spaniel
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

My family rescued this dog from Macoupin County Animal Control Feb 13, 2015. At the time, they guessed he was about 1 year old. So, at this time, we're using Feb 13th as his birthday and calling him 4 years old now. His story was that he was picked up running the rural area of the county, was in less-than-optimal health, having to be treated for parasites. He is now healthy, up to date on all vaccinations, and is thriving. The reason why we want to rehome him is due to not being able to accommodate his needs any longer. He's a lab and that means high energy. We have a large, fenced-in backyard, but Rocco needs more. He is best suited for a farm to run as much as he wants, or with someone who likes to go on long runs and is looking for a running partner. We highly recommend a home to have a fence height of at least 4 feet. Rocco's temperament is fantastic with our small children and our other senior dog. He is very friendly and loves to be the center of attention. He will sit on your lap, as well as sleep on your bed, if you allow him. (We don't allow either.) He loves to put his paw on your knee while you're sitting. He is also house broken, as we have a dog door that we often lock due to having small children. He'll go up to the door and scratch at it when he needs to go out, if it's closed. He's a great guard dog too. Those are the pros, now here are the cons: he is very needy, has separation anxiety that we've tried to correct, but have not been very successful because of the lack of persistence on our part. He is afraid of thunderstorms and becomes very anxious to the point of wanting to be by you all of the time. He does put his paw up on you incessantly, even after you've told him no. He is not kennel trained. And the biggest one is that he's a door darter if given the opportunity. While these cons may be off-putting for me, you may have better luck with him if you're more patient and willing to spend more time with him than my busy family can. Please consider Rocco despite these bad habits. He really is a good dog, and deserves better humans than us.
