About Baguette

Just one year old, our stunning black Lab, Baguette, seems to have the weight of the world on his shoulders. He came to us from NYC ACC, another homeless stray, that no one came to claim. When he arrived here, he was pretty sick. He had caught several of the shelter bugs, and needed a couple courses of antibiotics. We were quite alarmed at first, because his appetite was depressed and we couldn't get the pills into him. Nevertheless, we persisted, and eventually he turned the corner and drew a clean breath of air. Once Baguette began to feel better, we slowly saw his puppy mojo begin to awaken. Day by day his outlook improved, and in no time, Baguette developed the proud stance of an elegant Black Labrador Retriever. Baguette is a large, strong dog, slightly underweight at 70 pounds. He has a well-muscled frame, long legs, floppy Lab ears, and a long, natural tail. His coat is a lush blue-black, and he has deep brown eyes that convey a sense of trepidation. His lustrous coat is short, low shedding, and requires minimal grooming. We have begun Baguette on the Canine Good Citizen program, and he is grasping the basics, and making progress. Ongoing obedience work as well as outdoor activities, like frisbee play, will connect baguette to his retriever roots, and build his confidence. He seems slow to embrace change, so the best approach has been consistent activity and exposure to new people and new situations. We would describe Baguette as a shy, timid soul, at first, but once he becomes comfortable, he swings into action and is quite an active outdoors dog. He may not be a good choice for an active family, with kids who might have Disney expectations of their new dog. Instead, he would thrive with an active single or couple, who enjoy the process of helping a Rescue dog reach full potential. This kind of adoption, like no other, can give intangible rewards and satisfaction. Even though Baguette has made a lot of progress in overcoming fearful responses to new sights and sounds, he is going to need a patient, calm adopter to shepherd him through his early adult stage. The ideal situation would include another friendly, playful young dog to remind him of his puppy mojo. Baguette could easily join a multi-dog home, with well balanced dogs, and possibly cats, with proper introduction. He responds well to other gentle dogs, and a well trained, confident dog would be a fantastic companion for him. Baguette has an extremely gentle, sweet nature, and he obviously longs for a stable, loving human connection. Baguette is in excellent health and has been neutered. He has been vaccinated for rabies and DHLPPC (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvo, parainfluenza and coronavirus). He has had the 4snap test, and is negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. He has been microchipped and dewormed.
