About Spot

Spot's been working with one of our experienced volunteers. Here's what she has to say: Good Qualities: Young, energetic, friendly. highly intelligent, and very smart. He is visually stimulated and alert. Great dog for an active life style but must have a strong leader to respect. Older teens, rather than young children, might be best due to his activity level. Spot knows sit, down, catch when there is some type of reward like a toy, play yard or treat. He is highly intelligent, confident, learns quickly and is responding to my voice commands but will test me. He has learned LEAVE IT and TAKE IT with treats as an exchange. We are still working on this with toys (he will tear them apart or chew them). He can jump high and grab a toy quickly and then wants you to play the chase game. Don't do it! He WAITS at shelter gates and doors and learned to follow me on loose leash when I say THIS WAY but usually needs a reminder. He stays with me walking off leash in the extra-large play yard, COMES when I call him but goes flying past me. It's a start for the Come Command. We are working on heel but the leash at times is not his friend. Very responsive to high value treat training or high value toy reward using positive methods and praise. NEW OWNER NEEDS PATIENCE; I will work on teaching HEEL, STOP, DROP, COME etc. and common obedience words. He does better on a loose leash than in the heel position (control). Pulls hard if he wants to smell something or go in another direction. I stop and change direction (THIS WAY). He will test new owner often to see if you mean what you say or if he can outsmart you. Can back out of a collar. I don't know about other dogs yet but I wouldn't trust him with cats. Spot is very smart and he loves to hear GOOD BOY!
