About MacGyver

Adoption Fee: $350.00
Pit Bull
Age: Young Puppy
Sex: Male

OMG! Those eyes are bewitching! At the age of four months, MacGyver was found as a stray in Brooklyn, New York. Animal Control Officers brought him to NYC ACC, but despite great behavior evaluations, MacGyver flunked out of the adoption program, and was nearly euthanized, because he couldn't walk on a leash. So, MacGyver came to our Rescue to learn the basics. It became obvious to us that whoever owned MacGyver played vigorous tug-of-war with him, as is common practice for puppy playtime with a lot of folks. Believe me, MacGyver is the poster boy for 'Don't play tug-of-war with your puppy!' Tug-of-war is never a good idea, and always brings out an overly excitable response that can lead to aggression and resource guarding, but it's particularly not a good idea with Bully Breeds. As a strong Bully Breed pup, MacGyver was a real force to be reckoned with. He played good natured tug-of-war with the leash, like a maniac, and then would alligator roll making it impossible to walk him with any kind of collar-leash ensemble. After unsuccessfully battling MacGyver for leash dominance in the first few days, we swapped the collar and leash for a no-pull harness and progress has been simply remarkable. He is now leash trained, and has begun to master basic obedience commands. MacGyver has that dopey puppy personality that will tickle the fancy of an active family with older kids, who are all on the same page about raising an older puppy. MacGyver is now about five months old, and has that gangly look of young dog not yet in full command of his feet. McGyver already weighs 50 pounds, and would well reach 60 pounds as he reaches adolescence. He is a large, strong dog, and adopters must be prepared to continue his socialization and obedience work. The greatest challenge with MacGyver, is shepherding him through his puppy stage, and continuing him on a solid regimen of exercise and obedience. He is past the teething stage, and has not proven himself to be overly destructive, but folks who take on a young dog, must be prepared to puppy proof the premises and have realistic expectations of his limitations as far as house training and unsupervised time at home alone. MacGyver is extremely smart, and has begun to grasp the concepts of basic obedience training. He is a dog who could go the full route to Canine Good Citizenship certification, and become a well trained family member, who is welcomed everywhere. His temperament is outstanding: he is extremely friendly to everyone he meets. He has demonstrated no issues with other dogs. MacGyver has decent house manners for a youngster, and is mostly house trained and nicely crate trained. Adopters must expect to fine tune his potty routine, as he transitions to his new home. MacGyver is in excellent health, and has been neutered. He had one of the best Vet reactions of any dog we've had recently, as he cajoled his way through the poke and prod routine. He has been vaccinated for rabies and DA2PP (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvo, parainfluenza, and coronavirus). He has had the 4dx test, and is negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. He has been dewormed and microchipped.
