About Madison

Adoption Fee: $350
Chihuahua / Pug
Age: Young Puppy
Sex: Female

In the weeks leading up to the new year, our Rescue has received an unprecedented number of puppies. Usually puppy dumping occurs around May or June after the fanciful Christmas gifts get real. Nonetheless we are thrilled to start off the new year with so much promising new life. First in our cast of characters is Madison. At just three months old, this impossibly cute little girl was found as a stray in Manhattan. When she came to us, she weighed only 3.4 pounds, and now has ballooned up to 5. Madison was in the city shelter for her entire two week stray hold, and when no concerned owner came to claim her, she was slated for their adoption program. Unfortunately she also contracted the shelter kennel cough, and was sent to us so that we could get her back in shape for adoption. After a short course of antibiotics, Madison is as good as new, and has been cleared for adoption by our Vet. We believe that, based on her appearance, Madison is a Pug/Chihuahua mix, or 'Chug!' She's a tiny girl right now, who will probably get up to 10 pounds when fully grown. Madison has a stocky Pug type build, and slightly foreshortened dark muzzle, noticeable in profile. Her diminutive size and stand up ears are suggestive of Chihuahua characteristics. Madison is undaunted by this unwieldy rescue process that she has endured so far. She has an outstanding temperament: a friendly, guileless ingenue. The good-natured Pug DNA in Madison has completely won over the spirited, sometimes cranky, Chihuahua qualities. Just 3 months old, Madison is a blank canvas for folks who know what a sacred responsibility it is to raise a young puppy. She will be best served by adopters who have successfully raised a puppy before, and are prepared for the rewarding mayhem that comes with the miracle. Madison has amazing potential, and could easily join a home with older kids, who have been taught to be gentle with small dogs. She could join a multi-dog home, with other dogs who are well behaved and tolerant of puppy hijinks. Madison has a mellow, medium energy level, so senior dogs and cats might even be a good fit. Adopters considering a puppy as an only dog, must prepare for some mild separation anxiety during the first few night of transition. So far, Madison is crate training nicely, and is on the road to housebroken, but adopters must be patient and continue the process with consistency. She is walking well on lead, and is responding well to puppy kindergarten. Madison is in good health, and has already been spayed, vaccinated and dewormed.
