About Dakota

Australian Kelpie mix
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Female

Dakota is hands down the most amazing dog I have ever cared for - she is an Australian Kelpie with some other slight unknown mix and is about 38 pounds. I have fostered many dogs in the past, and while volunteering at my local shelter I came across her and decided to foster her with the intention of finding her the perfect home. My housing situation changed where I had a house with a fully enclosed yard and was living near an abundance of hiking trails, so I ended up keeping her more long term and showering her with love and affection. However, the time has come for me to move and become somewhat transient due to work (I am a photographer), and so I now must return to my original intention of finding her the perfect forever home. She is super affectionate and will love on you always - but she also enjoys her own space and will certainly not smother you or be overly needy. She is a 'worker dog' and will be looking for a job to do - so keep that in mind. If you do not have a yard and/or active lifestyle that allows her to get a lot of exercise then she is not the dog for you. I have been working on curbing her need to bark at everything that may seem like a threat to the 'castle' and she has become much more quiet over our time together. In fact she often will simply get a squeaky ball instead of barking - especially in the morning and evening hours. Needless to say she is whip smart. She has so many interesting sides to her - from the stoic on alert protector to the cuddly lover - to on rare occasions the slightly scared little pup (sometimes on full moons she gets a little on edge and will cower around a bit and want to be near you - still have not figured out what that is - but it also happens when there are fireworks - as it does with many other dogs). She does not like water - so do not expect her to be a lake dog - but she does not resist with any aggression when it is bath time - which is about every two weeks with us. Super friendly with other people. I work as a portrait photographer and she works with me - so she meets at least one new person everyday and hangs out. Never any aggression issues with other dogs - loves to play and roll around most of the time and play chase/herd the other dog - but then at other times prefers to just chill, and will gently just ignore other dogs if she is not in the mood. She is good on a leash, and on remote hikes when I feel it is safe, I will take her off leash and she will bolt around and run like crazy - but never out of site - and will always come running back to me when she hears me call her. She is an absolutely incredible dog. I will certainly be sad at times to be without her - but it already fills me with such joy to know that her forever home with a loving new group is just around the corner.
