The neighbor of a volunteer found dear little 4 year old Kurta with blood dripping from her mouth by the side of a road in The Angeles Crest Forrest. Apparently she had been thrown out of a car. As soon as she was picked up she curled into a little ball and hardly moved from it for 3 days. She was at once taken to the vet where she stayed for 5 days. Of course blood work was done along with a urinalysis and because she would neither walk nor stand a complete set of x-rays were taken. Everything came back completely normal. The vet was very sure that her behavior was due to her being completely traumatized as physically she was fine. Except for some teeth that had been knocked out. Finally we got her to stand and walk. However she would only walk in circles. It was then suggested that she see a neurologist. After a full exam and various tests he too concluded that she was quite fine physically. He found it amazing that she had no neurological damage as there were signs that she had been beaten around her head. He said she was one of the worst trauma cases he had seen in quite awhile. He felt that with patience and making her feel safe she would slowly come around though it could take as long as 6 months. She has been in her foster home for a little over 3 months and is doing beautifully. She is a delight on a leash, enjoys going in the car, she gets on just fine with the other dogs in the house and even the cat. She is learning to play with toys and will at times take off and run around the house. When meeting a new person she is still a little unsure and timid. She is now spayed, micro chipped and is up to date on shots. We do think she would do best in a calmer household with no small children. Kurta is an 8 lbs Yorkshire Terrier/Pomeranian mix.
