Lizzie was rescued during Hurricane Harvey. She had been living underneath a house in Houston when her make-shift home began taking in water on that first night of the storm. Lizzie was forced out from under the house where she normally slept and hid from the elements and other animals and found refuge from the rising water on the front porch. It was there that a neighbor saw her and was able to bring her home to a safe, dry place. The family whose home Lizzie was found on insisted that she was not theirs even though neighbors stated that Lizzie had been living under their home for months. Because the home owner had said that Lizzie was not their dog, the neighbor took Lizzie to BARC to be scanned for a microchip. It turned out that she had a microchip registered to BARC. Which means that Lizzie had already at some point been at BARC and either adopted out and then neglected again or an owner brought her in to be chipped and never registered the chip. Because she had a microchip registered to BARC, the neighbor was forced to leave her at BARC. They would not allow Lizzie to leave with her. Lizzie had to go to the process at BARC to see if an owner would come looking for her. And we all knew that they would not, as they had already denied she was theirs. If an owner would not come for her, then she would go through the BARC process to see if she had a chance of being adopted. We all know the chances of a High HW+ dog getting adopted from a shelter and they are not good. So we did what we needed to so that she would be safe and out of a shelter environment and back in foster.... We tagged and pulled Lizzie from BARC. Lizzie is High Heartworm Positive but has started slow kill treatment. She is now safe and will never have to live under a house or fear drowning from flood waters again. While only estimated at 3 years old, Lizzie is a gentle, older soul who loves to nap and have her head scratched. She is a bit shy and timid, but with a little time she certainly warms-up and has a lot of love to give. Lizzie is house-broken and walks well on a leash. She is quite calm and not one to be overly excited. She finds comfort in her crate but loves to snuggle up on a dog bed. In the time that we have had Lizzie, we have noticed that she must have experienced some sort of mental and maybe even physical trauma. When she first came to us she would not come to people at all, she would stay to herself and avoid all contact with people. She did not seem to trust although see seemed to long for love and human touch. She seemed confused because she desired the human touch and love but yet she did not quite trust enough to accept it. She also seemed to not know exactly what to do around other dogs. Although she is not aggressive by any means at all, she did not seem to know how to socialize with animals either. She seemed to do better around other dogs but just did not know how to act around them. We decided that in order for Lizzie to succeed in a home of her own with a family of her own she needed more taining to gain confidence and socialization with both people and other dogs. Lizzie was sent to a boarding and training facility in Willis, TX where she is getting the much needed socialization training. She was first connected to another Shepherd with a dog coupler so that she was forced to be around a confident GSD and this helped her also to learn how to be around other dogs and gain her confidence. She no longer needs to be connected to the other GSD. Lizzie is doing quite wonderfully with people as well now and althoug still a bit shy, she will come around and her personality will shine once she gets used to you. The tainer says Lizzie will do best in a home with other dogs so help and continue to boost her confidence and seems her personality really shines around other dogs.
