About Winston

This is Winston. Winston is a 12-15lb 3-4 year-old male Chihuahua. He is neutered, vaccinated and micro-chipped. And, this is Winston's story: I tried to declare war on them and behave as a lawful enemy combatant when they first captured me. If they tried to touch me I would attempt to bite them. If they picked me up against my will, I would deliver my most blood-curdling of screams and release my defense-mechanism, 'hot urine.' When your namesake is Sir Winston Churchill you have to be a strong character to live up to it. And, I am quite a character. But, I appear to have met my match with this foster-family . . . I just couldn't put them off. They were patient. They gave me space and time to adjust. Even their dog savvy grandchildren, who often visit, knew what to do-they moved slowly around me-they never startled me. The entire family treated me with the utmost of respect. And, they gave me unconditional love. So, eventually my defenses fell away. And, I have become quite fond of the ladies in the household. I tolerate the man of the house and have learned to trust him. Therefore, I will allow him to pat me, as long as he doesn't try to pick me up. But, I am still leery of the male species, in general. I prefer females, and will even approach them of my own accord to accept gentle pats. I adore the warmth and comfort of the home. I am almost housetrained, I am a good aim on pee pads inside and I do my business outdoors 2-3 times a day . . . but I do not like to linger outside. I am crate-trained and so-so walking on leash. I am smart as a whip and will respond to several commands when I am in the mood. I know: 'Come,' 'Stay,' 'Down' and 'Sit.' I have been described as: affectionate, joyful and well-behaved, but at times, I am shy, fearful, skittish and standoffish. I get along well with the other dog that lives here and I ignore the cat. Outdoors, they have these gargantuan creatures they call, 'Cows.' I remain convinced that these Cows are plotting a murderous attack and I warn my people with loud barks of alert every time I see them. My people clearly fail to understand the danger they are in. But fear not, humans, I Winston am persistent in my resolve! My foster father said that I would not be a good match for anyone with toddlers and if you have children at all, they should be respectful and dog savvy . . . actually, anyone thinking about adopting me should understand the quirky 'snarky' attitudes that Chihuahuas often have-especially when they have a history of humans mistreating them. I believe it was Sir Winston Churchill, who said: 'Success is not final, future is not fatal; it is the courage to continue that counts.' And, I am nothing if not courageous . . . I will, carry on.
