Petunia was born about June 14, 2012 and has filled out beautifully to about 60 lbs. She came to us extremely underweight and extremely pregnant! Petunia delivered 5 healthy babies about a week later, but we were worried we were going to loose her when the pups were 3 days old. We were terribly concerned due to her age and condition that there was a dead pup still inside. It was off to Dr. Nachbar's office for the entire family. An ultrasound and xray revealed she had delivered everyone, but there was a definite infection somewhere. We were all very lucky that a course of antibiotics did the trick and then did she ever begin to gain weight! She has been the best mother ever and these pups are ridiculously cute and sure have her sunny personality! They will be ready for adoption about the first of September, but sadly don't seem to have much of the Basset torso or legs. Maybe that will be more evident later on. We have no clue how this poor mother to be ended up at the high kill shelter as this is all we know so far as the staff at the southern shelter doesn't ask any questions as the reason for relinquishment is so often financial and they feel it is embarrassing to the owners. So, we will be learning more about her as we go and so will you. She does appear to be house trained.
