About Popeye

Rottweiler
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Popeye came from the euthanasia list in an L.A. County Shelter. He had cherry eyes in both of his eyes really bad. A vet in LA offered to fix his eyes, if a rescue would step up and save him, so we did, and he was scheduled for surgery. After his surgery it became necessary to board him for a week before we could get him transported to Az. Unfortunately, a different vet's office boarded him and they did not make him wear a cone and didn't put drops in this eyes and he popped his stitches and his cherry came back up. So he arrived in AZ a mess and after a dose of antibiotics we scheduled him with our vet to have the surgery done a 2nd time. He still has a lot of swelling from the surgery so it's hard to tell what he will ultimately look like, but it is a lot better than it was. Our vet said he has had two major surgeries on a very delicate part of his body in a month's time and I should expect that it's going to take his awhile to heal. I'm praying that it gets better soon, otherwise he may be stuck looking like he hasn't slept in a week. Popeye has been living in my kitchen since he arrived from LA almost 2 months ago. He kisses some of the dogs through the fence and other dogs get him really excited. I have not been able to let him run and play with the other dogs because I do not want the other dogs to cause trauma to his eyes. I am also not 100% sure that he will be friendly with them. I think he could co-exist in a friendly manner and possibly even love a little girl dog someday, but probably not hang with boys. I have not seen him around cats or other animals or children. Without the excitement of the other dogs he is a pretty mellow guy. I love him because he never counter surfs or gets in the garbage no matter what I leave on the counter. He has to have a lot of self-control not to counter soft. Since he lives in my kitchen he has plenty of opportunity. He is independent and does not require a lot of maintenance such as demanding that you pet him, he doesn't lick people and he never jumps on people. He is a perfect gentleman. He would be successful with a single person or an older couple without any pets, or with one female friendly submissive dog. He loves going for walks, and knows some basic commands.
